Human Greed
    #2622331 - 04/30/04 05:42 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I wonder if this is the primary evolutionary force that will get us off this berg and out into space? Yes, that salivating, insatiable need for more, may be our greatest distinguishing characteristic and be necessary to be a space-faring race.

Or is this one of the deplorable human qualities that causes more suffering? The fact that there is no such thing as enough? The fact that we've created system upon system to support and manage this greed, which produces results such as poverty?

Or do you think there is a level of moderation to our greed that would be useful? That our greed can be redirected to something other than petty materialism and economic elitism?

I don't see how space travel ties in with greed. I would say greed is much more negative then positive, if it is positive at all. We would develop faster and get further if there was less greed because people would work together better instead of trying to further their own greedy desires. Personally I don't like greed. It does a lot of terrible things to a lot of people. Don't underestimate it's powers.

The want for more. Whether that is more knowledge, more information due to exploration, .. and not to mention money is the driving force behind many innovations and discoveries nowadays..

that's how i was relating space travel to greed.

I think you're confusing greed. Wanting to better your situation is not being greedy. I want to learn a lot of stuff, but does that make me greedy?

Quote:

greed P Pronunciation Key (gr d)
n.
An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth:

An eager desire or longing; greediness; as, a greed of gain.

It says ?especially? in regards to material wealth, but the phrasing of the definition I wouldn?t say it would mean ?limited to?.

Greed is simply the want for more.

I disagree. Like it says, greed is an excessive desire. I'm not sure how to compare science and knowledge with greed. It's like comparing Kill Bill Vol.1 to Vol.2. They are both different movies. With science if it isn't hurting anyone else gaining extra knowledge then I wouldn't consider it greed. It's when you have people who are greedy and begin stealing and hurting others that it becomes a problem but that's straying from the question. I don't think greed furthers our race, just supresses it more. So greed = bad, bettering your situation = good. Am I making any sense? I'm sort of rambling in a disjointed fashion.

Greed in my eyes is when we forget that everything is sacred. Everything in this world gets used, we use things and we get used, it's simply the nature of the world so it should never be let to negatively effect you. When we use more then we need and in turn waste it, that is the product of greed. Using only for the purpose of indulging ourselves is an act which stems from the ego. We must fight it, and eradicate it.
