Is greed good?

Damn, I want to stick my finger in every pie and lick off the cream (no you perverts - well, maybe...). I want to see all there is and more. I want to hear the angels sing, to surf a 30 foot roller, to jump into a volcano and only get a little singed, to hike Mt. Shasta...

or maybe just get HBO - dunno.

The proof is in the pudding.

Greed is an advantageous attribute within the capitalist system. In a purely natural sense, there is an upper limit on the amount of greed that is beneficial. Excessive greed leads to a lack of resources, etc. (i.e., imagine cutting down all the trees simply to have plenty of firewood).

Hey, we are individuals for a reason. Just as long as we don't destroy the connections between ourselves and others, than I don't see a problem with doing things that satisfy us.

If I should die this very moment
I wouldn't fear
For I've never known completeness
Like being here
Wrapped in the warmth of you
Loving every breath of you

I think Greed is when you exhibit a level of behavior that is in EXCESS of what one would normally call it in absence of the excessiveness, be it desire, appetite, etc.

When you want to eat every goddamn pie you see in existence to the point that you're not even eating it for nutritional value (as if it has any :smirk:) or for your hunger, but just cuz you want to eat it for the sake of your own pleasure, so you can trigger more of the physiological levels of "love" that you can get from eating copious amounts of chocolate, having sex, kissing, even seeing beautiful sights, etc., Then thats when I think it could constitute as greed, or perhaps, gluttony.

But, is that bad or not? I think it ultimately boils down to whether or not the greed or gluttony is causing you or anybody else harm. Eating too much of ANYthing out of pure gluttony is bad for your body. And at the same time, it can be bad to other people if you're hogging all the food to yourself, and not leaving enough food for them to even have a healthy meal.

As far as your other examples, coveting to see the angels sing, jump in volcanoes...I woulnd't call it Greed, nor would I call it bad. Greed is in excess of a desirous behavior. And I think that particular behavior, like I've stated above, is only bad when you cause yourself and others harm. So your desire to see and experience those adventures, are simply desires that most of us, if not all, have one way or another. Sights and Adventures of expeditions and safaris and so on, is basically one of our few natural pleasures that aren't able to "run out" simply by having too many people participating in the pleasure of seeing such and such.
BUT, they CAN be depleted by greedy governments of the beautiful jungles wanting to selll the enchanting forests with all its beautiful creatures to the monster corporations who will gut-lessly chop it all down so that they can get paper and wood, and so on.

Coffee should be black as hell, strong as death, and sweet as love.

no, greed is not good.

sticking up for yourself is OK though.

I guess its where you draw the line between the two that is debatable.

Generally the most satisfied and sucessful people got there using greed.

Of course "money does not buy happiness", as repeated ad nauseum, but is it really true?

I mean, making wealth and power your goal, and then obtaining it would certainly make you feel pretty good about yourself.

Greed might be able to satisfy individuals and make them happy.

Studies have been done that indicate people without enough money to meet their basic necessities, i.e. food, drink, shelter, etc are not nearly as happy as people who have enough money for those needs.

However, it is not a correlation that a millionaire is happier than a person with 100,000 dollars.

So the answer is yes, and no.

C.S. Lewis speculated that wanting an experience to be repeated at will was the start to depravity. He was speaking of experiences that weren't necessary for survival.
