Enchant
1. To cast a spell over; bewitch.
2. To attract and delight; entrance.

Recent readings (The Re-enchantment of Everyday Life, Pronoia,Everyday Blessings) have inspired me to consider what makes being alive truly worthwhile.

It is not, for me at least, the repetitive activities of day-to-day life.  It is not progress towards accumulating material goods.  It is not the acquisition of knowledge.  It is not building a network of useful and reliable people.  It is not receiving praise, awards or accolades.

My best guess is that what makes life more than mere survival is the experience of enchantment.  Being in love with life, starry-eyed over existence, and deep in lust with the sensual aspects of embodiment.

The contrast for this is disenchantment, in which the world seems beige, mundane, boring, flat & pleasureless.  Thoreau called this type of living "quiet desperation," which raises the question "what are we desperate for?"  I think we are desperate for delight.

It is challenging to navigate the modern world without succumbing to disenchantment.  The busy-busy, rush-rush, disconnected style of living does not lend itself to developing a depth of appreciation.  With barely a moment to wolf down an Egg McMuffin, how can we remain in lust with the sensual aspects of being alive?  When the world seems to be a solid strip of concrete, how can we delight in the vibrant chaos of nature?

Yet foregoing these experiences is hazardous to our physical and mental well-being.  When life is drained and desiccated, our thirst becomes unbearable.  Many will self-medicate to avoid the yearning, others may despair and choose to end their life.

What can we do to restore the juiciness of being alive?  What do YOU do within your own life to quench your thirst for delight?

Are you enchanted?  :voila:

Great post!  I will add those books to my (long!) to-read list.

In my experience, the world becomes beige when my thoughts, rather than my sensory perceptions, are at the forefront of my experience.  Thinking takes over so easily, that I need to remind myself constantly to redirect my attention to the physical composition of the moment I am in.

So I use reminders.  I associate certain common activities with the intention to be mindful.  For example, every time I open my car door and step out, I always remember to be mindful of the sensation of the cool air flooding in, the weight of the door, the  feel of my clothes, the feeling of my breathing and the tissues that make up my body, all the sights and sounds of the scene I have just entered.

I set up reminders all over the place:  Using a staircase, entering a room, taking my place in a supermarket line, sitting down to a meal, lying down in bed... anything I do regularly that I might otherwise gloss over is a great candidate for an intentional reminder.

When I do this, the wonder and curiosity comes back to me in that moment, and I carry that awareness into the next moment.  The longer I go without a reminder, the less likely I am to be able to resume that state of openness readily.  So I need lots of reminders.

Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man.  For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire.  Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it.

These are very good ideas! I live out in the country, and I start every day walking through the woods.  Your senses let you become aware of your enviroment. As you become aware your senses will heighten.

Well i say you have to be truly conscious to be able to take in the real world around you, this vibrant chaos of what is todays nature
What do i do to quench my thirst for delight? I like to connect with nature and the animal world as much as i can. I also like to learn about the things that make my heart beat faster, just at the thought of them.
To say, "to be able restore the juiciness of being alive", this restoration you seek would have to be something you know to be true within yourself. And then set forth from that and keep building.
Id like to be enchanted
