How are these agar plates looking?

Hi all can you let me know what you see in these agar plates.  Not to sure what I'm looking for yet.

Print.  The black stuff is probably spores or soot from my inoculation loop.  It's been there since inoculation.

Yea that's what I'm afraid of.  They don't have that uniform wavy arms away from center thing going on.  The growth looks much more random. :frown:

What was your heating source?

Also I’d begin doing small xfers from all perimeter growth at certain points where I would feel this looks ‘healthy’ but really small like rice size at this stage

I’d say all are a bit off but defly can be saved

Spores to agar first time you'll get weird growth, they won't look like they will 2 or 3 transfers in. Bottom pic, lower blob, 9 o clock position, take a tiny piece. Picture 2, 3 o'clock position. First picture, spot with the black dot, take a 7-8 o'clock position transfer and you may get out of all the fuzzy

Thanks.  I could use some help salvaging this. I used a propane torch.  Using Bod's inoculation loop TEK.  Got it glowing hot between each plate.  There are no growths in spots that I didn't do the zig-zag so it probably wasn't PC or SAB technique?

Is the assumption that there may be myc growing along with the mold and the transfer may allow the two to spread out and grow in separate directions?

Good advice here.

I agree with everyone. They dont look great but its not the end of the world. Prints are inherently dirty and most times youll need to do a couple transfers before you get something youd want to put to grain. Ultimately you want uniform growth radiating in a circle from a central point.

Thanks Je77Ce11ar.  Is the idea that there is healthy myc and something else growing on top of each other and that the transfer will give it room to spread out?  Then next transfer I could isolate just the myc?

Yes, mycelium can grow on top of contaminates as well as contaminates can grow on top of mycelium. They may not necessary germinate or "show themselves" right away, but usually by the time an agar plate is fully colonized you'll easily be able to tell if the culture is clean or dirty.

Transfering involves taking a rice-sized piece of agar at the edge of the growing mycelium and putting that piece onto a new dish. By doing this, you aim to remove a healthy piece of mycelium from the contaminated dish and grow it out until you have a culture free from other microbes. However, since these organisms can and do grow on top of each other, it may take several transfers to achieve this goal.
