There was definitely a distinction back in the day. I've seen some ancient drills that still work today.

I'm actually a fan of old Russian stuff if we're going back to that. I've got some of my great grandfather's tools (slightly pre-WWII era) that I still use today. My great grandma's sowing machine is still working fine, from what my cousin tells me. It was one of those old school foot powered dealios where you would rock the foot plate back and forth. Shit weighted about a ton.

Of course, the problem is that it's all just heavy as shit, being made of pretty solid steel/cast iron.

Problem is with modern goods. Planned obsolescence is a trend that started in the consumerism of the US, sometime in the 90's. I think that was mostly fueled by the tech boom, because tech is fundamentally difficult to repair. Then that concept just got expanded to every industry.

Now, it's expanded worldwide. Which means everyone is making similarly cheap shit, and I just buy the cheapest, which usually means Chinese. Lately, I've been getting a lot more stuff from Malaysia and Indonesia, since Chinese goods are getting (relatively) expensive.

And yes. As I mentioned in the child-molestation topic, I am scary skinny, and quite tall. This is why I avoid contact with strange children, I've had kids point and stare before. I'm very much an easy target for complaints of being "the scary man". People literally compared me to slenderman back when that was big a few years ago.

Edit: I guess I can wear 30x34 with a belt, but it does look a bit baggy. Definitely can't tuck my shirt in with a 30 waist without looking ridiculous. Which I try to avoid.

I remember when I was a little kid in the 1960's when made in Japan meant plastic garbage. But by the 1980's their cars had much higher quality then ours (we caught up since then some what). I'm predicting this is going to happen with China, when they soon economically bury us. It's exactly the same thing. Reverse engineering and a boatload of hardworking people.

Made in china. When all circuits switch to digital breakers and ordinary equipment starts coming standard with PLC control and HMIs rather than being reserved for the big kids. China is going to rise to the top

That doesn’t sound right. Trump is taking money from the park service to cover the costs. I heard it was $2.5 million above and beyond the $2 million allocated for the normal July fourth activities in DC.

I don’t think trump has given federal workers a four day weekend, sometimes that is done when a major holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday. The fact that people will have to work on Friday will cut down on attendance. It can take hours to get out of the city after the fireworks on the fourth.
