Just planning on putting it through the desiccator for a day or two to get them reasonably dry then quickly in the oven on fan bake to get them as dry as possible. I can't find a cheap dehydrator anywhere in store, I don't have the option to purchase online as of currently.

This ones available in store, its the one i got and does the trick. Bit noisey though

I'm working minimum wage, I'm not sure if it's going to be worth spending $100 on a dehydrator. I'm lucky enough to have no bills to pay, food to buy etc. however I'm just not convinced at that price. I'll see how my desiccator works. Worst comes to worst, I'll trade them with friends and eat the rest before they rot.

Thanks for the suggestion though

Sounds real convincing that these are going to dry properly..

Went out for a 1:30am walk to the mushroom growing down the road from me. Looked perfect for harvest, so harvest I did.

5 days from when I first spotted it, watering each day. Only one mushroom, but worth it :v

From this...

To this...

Bonus tiny blue snail. I wonder if it's magic? :crazy2:

Wonderful photos and finds

Am a fan of NZ mushies, so far only trying to grow subs but i know its not a cultivation thread.

Weraroa is still my holy grail and has been for quite a while.

Would like to get in touch with hunting kiwis.

Question about weraroa: would/does it drop spores to form a print, if you cut off the bottom and suspend on a couple of skewers or something?

Edit: apparently no you dont get a spore rpint because it does not have the ability to properly eject spores (ballistospory).

Hey dune, nice to see you

I'm new to this, but couldn't you just leave it there then when it rains a couple of days next chances are a patch would grow?

Just found my first patch yesterday, found another today. Seems like after looking for ages they just keep popping up.

A shitty question, but I've got these sitting drying in a poorly made desiccator in a forest near me so I'm not able to weigh them as of currently. Could anyone more experienced give me a rough estimate?

Dried weight; 10g-20gs

Drying. . .
Overnight in oven in fan bake @50-60°C. Make sure you split them all first to speed up the process.

I assume your thought is that it'll drop spores and more will grow?

The spores take a few days to weeks to germinate and then will take months to consolidate enough to produce fruits. The spores from this mushroom will likely not be producing fruits until next season, or perhaps even the season after.

Yeh boiii, kawaii :nyan:

It's the only sub I've found growing in my area that isn't going to get pillaged immediately, got to keep the little fella going

Oh of course. If one were to find a patch, pick all the developed mushrooms and leave pins/smaller mushrooms, would they continue to grow if left alone? Can a patch just 'die out'?

i just went to a patch today that ive been picking for three years, i always pull them from this certain location and never cut them to see if it does actually destroy a patch, produces 2-3 flushes a season. i think it mainly depends on the substrate, moisture level etc... Frost is a big killer of subs as well. you should be able to get fresh fruits again in 2-3 weeks if conditions are right, that is my experience anyway.

PIN Etiquette:

Sorry if this is not right place to ask this but it is a NZ mushroom hunting specific question. If you find a patch with some pins, is it best to just leave the patch in the open air uncovered as you found it (after taking the big enough ones of course), or is it ok to cover the pins up somewhat so they are not as visible? A few patches ive found are in quite visible locations and im worrried they will be seen and disturbed or pillaged before they are ready. If it is ok to cover, should i just lightly cover with some chips ans/or grass etc? (obviously taking care not to squash them and to leave room to allow them to grow. Cheers

Depends how public the patch is and if you want to risk people finding them... Sometimes it is a okay idea to place a bit of leaf debris over the pins so they are not easily spotted.

Taped a mesh kitchen sieve above the fan on my dehumidifier. Worked well overnight then in a container with damp rid.

Also pulled up and seen a bird having a good old time in the pine woodchip. Ohh nature why must you do these things!

Picking pins:-
Stop the organism from being able to reproduce (pins haven’t released their spores yet).
Stop you from getting very high (heaps more psilocybin to be added as the pin grows to a cap).
Damages the mycelial mat, reducing production in the current season (heavy speculation).
