Yes and kinda. DNA in all plants/fungus/animals/humans is very similar. The only really big difference is the "gene switch" as it's known is much more susceptible to fire in plants and fungus than animals due to how the DNA is arranged. That is why fungus seems able to evolve/change its molecular structure much faster and in general is much more adaptable to stress and environment changes than animals are.

Sure. Though most species have gender as the vehicle for heritable gene cross convolution, how does that relate to method of convolution we observe in the mycological realm?

My understanding is that spawn only requires endofusion with another culture of a compatible specie type.

To frame it another way: Does this mean they are sans gender, polygender or (what effectively appears to be) infinite genders?

I believe that is correct about crossing-over, the gender debate is still a controversial topic though and seems to vary over genus types. A massive amount of diversity in reproductive mating systems can be found in fungi. I believe it mainly depends on whether it is more beneficial for the particular species as a whole to evolve at an individual level (poly/infinite genders) or whether infinite genetic replication (sans gender) is more beneficial for the evolutionary progress of the species - this is clearly still a young area of research and we still understand far less about fungal genetics than we do plants and animals - http://www.mycolog.com/CHAP10.htm

Psilocybe subaeruginosa belongs in Sect. Cyanescens, there is a species complex here in New Zealand from section Cyanescens and it's very likely that P. cyanescens, P. subaeruginosa and P. allenii are all here, P. weraroa, P. 'subsecotioides', P. makarorae and P. tasmaniana are also from Sect. Cyanescens.

P. angulospora is in Sect. Semilanceatae, the first record I know of from NZ is from 1969 and that collection was one of the collections examined for the published description of P. makarorae hence my confusion and misidentification of P. angulospora as P. makarorae over the years, they are not so closely related.

P. aucklandiae belongs in Sect. Zapotecorum and is quite close to the Mexican species P. muliercula, it's safe to say it is indigenous but not endemic and where it originated from is unknown, possibly introduced.

I meant P.subaureginosa, which in turn came from P.Cyanescens. Apologies for the confusion, and while I don't profess to know exactly how some species are related to others I can see the signs of a likely relationship and possible divergences of species in the past. I may not be a professional mycologist but I know my genetics. If you don't believe all these psilocybe species ALL came from one mother mushroom and have slowly spread out and adapted to their individual environments you are foolish. It's like saying whites blacks asians mexicans and australians and yourself all evolved individually of each other and that we cannot ALL be traced back to mother Africa, which we can

With respect to your position that subs came from cyans. Up until this year I was buying the widely held idea that North American members of of the cyans complex were indigenous to the NA PNW, even though I was suspicious of this because they are only rarely found in wild habitats here. That all changed earlier this year for me after I studied up on the latest genetic sequencing data (thank you Alan R. for getting me going on this!) and examined observational and taxonomic history of subs, including reading all the peer-reviewed papers I could find on the topic. I now believe there is a convincing body of evidence that points to subs being endemic to Australia (possibly NZ too?), with North American cyans, azures and allenii representing genetically "bottlenecked" variations of subs that were most likely inadvertently introduced to the west coast of North America during the 1800's and early 1900's when there was much importation of Australian flora into the NA PNW.  A couple of key things that solidified this idea for me: Comparing observational details of Australian specimens to NA specimens it becomes abundantly clear that Australia is an epicenter of genetic diversity for this species complex, as can be seen by the extraordinary diversity of phenotypes found there. You don't see anywhere near that level of diversity of phenotypes here in NA PNW, which would be congruent with the expected outcome when a species is transplanted across a large distance, creating a genetic bottleneck with a reduced genetic diversity in the new location, a.k.a. The Founder Effect.  Also, I didn't tally up the numbers, but the ratio of observations made in wild habitats vs. human-landscaped habitats is clearly much higher in Australia vs. NA PNW, which further supports the theory. I also compared the climate variables of several locations in Australia where subs are found compared to NA PNW locations, and the data shows that the Australian rainfall patterns are more spread out over the course of the year compared to NA PNW, where summers are almost completely dry - I believe a key reason why our NA PNW populations are almost entirely restricted to human-landscaped areas. In regards to knowledge or traditional use by Australian aborigines, I found records suggesting that they had knowledge of them but forbade their consumption, believing they were evil according to their religion/folklore/creation stories - perhaps analogous to how the Chinese culture shuns cannabis use even though it is endemic there.

Always enjoy reading a mycologists point of view. On a macroscopic level P.tasmaniana resembles P.semilanceata more than it does P.subaeruginosa.

DNA closest to P.semilanceata according to alvalab. Closest to P.baeyocystis from Alan Rockefeller DNA results. Jan Borovicka thought close to P.semilanceata except for the small spore size. Did he contact you regarding the paper he was going to write on the P.tasmaniana specimens I sent him?

You have been a great help to me doing research on P.tasmaniana, alutacea and papuana. I only raise these points to get your opinion. Which I value highly.

If I study the gills on a specimen of P.tasmaniana they closely resemble alutacea and semilanceata. Different to subaeruginosa to look at.

P.alutacea is in section Semilanceatacae. DNA results comparing tasmaniana with alutacea makes them a close match. When P.tasmaniana was placed in section Cyanescens not much study of this species had been undertaken. Do you think P.tasmaniana warrants further study to clear this up?

The fact that tasmaniana can grow on wood, bark, leaves and horse dung makes me think it behaves more like subaeruginosa than alutacea or semilanceata. So I dont know. You'd know a lot more about it than me. So Inski what do you think? Guess time will tell.

Mushrooms in the "cyanescens complex" fruit in autumn when the temperature lowers. P.tasmaniana fruits in Summer - ref- Liberty cap allies fruiting in Australia in Summer.

P.tasmaniana will fruit in an open field in February. The size of specimens depends more on what they are fruiting on. Around horse manure the specimens are larger than those grown on bark and leaves. They seem to rely on heavy rainfall to fruit well. Rather than lower temperatures.

Anyway my opinion means nothing. I just would like to draw attention to those points. Thanks.:smile:

Hi Waikato Crew

How is the season going? Any reports of recent finds? I had a great time in June but have been out of area for a while so haven't had a decent hunt. Are we seeing any late flushes happening? Feels like it's cold and wet enough!

Thanks!

Thanks for the clarification inski, interesting info about subs variability in oceania and possibly being endemic to aus/nz doug cheers

Went for a look at the patch where I found the damaged pics I posted last week, wasn't expecting to find much but was stoked to see another flush came through with all the rain;

Can confirm that the damages are definitely caused by nematodes;

20min after picking;

That's interesting. I can see what looks like a maggot in your second image and I would not be surprised to see that much damage by maggots in 20 minutes. How big are the nematodes and how did you confirm that this damage has been made by nematodes?
