Normal for Spore Prints to look like this? (pics)
    #26064716 -

hey so I got these spores the other day for microscopy purposes.

the circled ones are the ones i recieved (sent me a pic to show stock. and yes, i did match up the handwriting to see which ones i recieved lol)

As you can see, they look nothing alike. so is it possible that they can fall off like this during post or something? my main concern is that they've been opened during shipping and maybe they took a sample or something??

I don't really care that they turned out they way they did, my real worry now is what I said above.

Just some light/sporadic spore droppings. The individual you got them from probably tried to make multiple prints from individual caps. Many people do this I myself prefer one thick dark print per cap. Should be fine all you need is a pinheads worth.

thanks for the reply:smile:

i see what you are saying, but if you see the circled prints in the picture, they are the prints that i recieved (i matched up the hand writing to see which ones i got, and am 100% certain its the circled ones).

so it seems somewhere along the line they went from the first pic, to the second pic. I'm not sure if this is relatively common for postage to happen. i'm sure some spores fall off, but to this extent? I am worried that they may have been opened in postage and tampered with in whatever way.

I mean, I can see spores in there, but I don't see how that tiny amount can make a fairly dark spore print like in the first pic

Its also possible that the picture is from a pervious owner to the person i bought them from, which means they could have been shipped out more than once.

The photos on the right look like the spores were carefully scraped off the card. I would say someone is trying to rip you off I believe. I don't see any spores on the bottom of the package at all.

yeah that's what I thought (but not that the seller did it, but someone at the postal system did it), but I told the guy about it and he said that this has happened to him when he bought prints (but I don't know if he was saying that to make me feel better), and he insisted on sending me out more prints to make up for them (which I declined, coz I don't want anymore prints in the postal system with my name on it), so I doubt he was trying to rip me off.

I'm gonna try and take a better pic in better lighting sometime. Also I want to try and scrape what I can off of each print and see if the pile matches up with the first pic.

This can also happen if someone chooses to print caps that have already dropped their spores heavily. Leading to a lesser drop on the foil. You should still easily be able to get a culture running from that, regardless.

Out of all of my mushroom hunting and spore prints taken, I've never turn out like that after any amount of time. #4 especially looks scraped as if by a rectangular blade. Like others said, should be enough there to start a culture and then you can clean it up from there. Messed up someone would do that to your postage.

Honestly the prints are on sketchy paper inside of trading card holder pages cut up into sections. They should be printed and wrapped up on foil then sealed inside a ziploc. Moisture could have easily gotten in there and wiped the spores all over. I would bet on that way more than a postal employee sabotaging your mail.

yeah that could have played a role. it looks like 2 out of the 3 weren't very much to begin with so yeah (and the darkest print is the one that has the most spores spread out on the card and a bit on the rear of the card)

I mostly was referring to :cop: but they shipped them on mid Wed and they arrived on Mon, so I don't know how long it takes for them to do whatever it is they do when they find these things. so its not like it was held up for a week or anything

yeah i think that could also have played a role, tho i don't think its regular trading card holders cut up, its some sort of thin plastic that has sticky strip on the top and side, but even so as you said this wouldn't be airtight at all.

Also, the person only put these in a regular envolope, they didn't fold them up in regualr paper or a B-day card or anything, so i'm suppose they could have been knocking back and forth the whole time in the envolope.

tomorow i'm gonna get a stanley knife blade and scrape everything i can get off them into seperate piles and ask you guys if the piles look like they match up to what those before pictures should equate to. that should give a better idea.

The more i look at the right photos, it looks like someone shot water, maybe from a syringe. The cards look like they got wet then lost their spores before being placed in the clear sleeve. Thats one reason why i dont print on paper.

Never know

More likely it was tampered with before mailing it, at least thats my current theory.

I also noticed each card has a sharpie number on it as well. Who put that there?

No, they absolutely didn't do that lol. They would seize the entire thing and send you a note saying they took it. They just look like some amateur business spore prints

Most logical thing is they bounced around the envelope and lost the spores. Its a bummer for you and I would take him up on the offer for another shipment if you cant get a clean culture out of that.

Also it would be a felony to tamper with your mail I doubt someone opened your package and scraped your spores or syringed them lol. Spores are legal to send in the mail for most states so you really shouldnt be worried. Thats why we do it for eachother all the time (:

Dude, the man doesn't give a damn about your microscopy spores. It got to your house on the 3rd business day after it shipped and you think they somehow had time to open your mail, take a sample, reseal it and get it to you? This thread is akin to the tweakers that think the government is spending 10k per hour to watch their stupid high asses take apart vacuum cleaners. Gtfoh, bs like this scares newbies. Maybe dial back whatever it is that you're using that caused this psychotic episode.

I think the seller did. I sent him the same photo and he didn't say anything about him not putting the sharpie on it. I just assumed he did it for his own labelling or whatnot

yeah i think the guys is on the amature side of the spectrum.

but i was worried that maybe they sent the letter on its way without putting any indication of it being inspected, and maybe pay a visit in the future? (i'm sure it wouldn't be the first time). but i'm probably just being too paranoid, but i can't help it tho lol

yeah that is looking like the most probably thing that happened. I tried playing it safe by only going within the country, as I can't say I've ever read about anyone losing spores in the mail from just interstate, but I still wanted to know if anyone has had a similar situation to this or something

the fact they arrived so quickly makes me think that they didn't have time to do what testing they need (but then, i don't know how long that stuff actually takes). I know there is probably nothing bad going to happen, but when i saw these spore prints, it still makes me think about the possibilities.

Ok new to growing mushrooms but NO ONE at the post office OR police took your spores! first off spores are legal...you could litterly have a cop show up at your door while being delivered....ALSO even the illegal stuff that goes through the mail (lets say marijuana seeds) if customs or anyone takes them they will send the rest of the package ( if there is anything else in the package minus the seeds of course) and they will send a letter saying they seized it (usually this takes weeks) as long as you DONT claim it your good....I want you to think about something think about ALL the packages seized by customs do you know the amount of money it would take to track down and arrest everyone....but again spores are LEGAL.....I know people that have had much MUCH worse sieazed and never did anyone suffer any consequence...also If they sieze it they haven't delivered it and you haven't taken posetion
