Easy way to make shoebox monos with cakes
    #26069770 -

By no means is this a groundbreaking new idea, I just wanted to show you guys how I did it, and where I got the advice on here.

First, I took followed Ziran's coir tek. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24622604

Then I followed Mushboy's shoebox tek, but went with Munchauzen's suggestion of just making a dub tub instead of putting them into a large tote https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24038695/fpart/1/vc/1

I had a bunch of cakes, so I decided to put six in three shoeboxes. Ziran's coir prep will get you almost exactly three quarts of substrate (two boxes if you use six cakes and want 1:1). I simply used a cheese grader to grind up each cake I used a 1:1 ratio, mixed evenly, with just a little extra layer of coir on top. Six half pint cakes come out to 1.5 quarts spawn, which is how much coir I used.

I have only made one so far, as I was just waiting for the rest of my cakes to finish up, but I will make them shorty. I will post updates along the way. I found this to be a super easy way to make shoeboxes!

All three will be B+. This one is on day two.

Yeah, I know, but I still just feel like they won't get enough FAE with the lid on, but I am just being stubborn

Waste of extra tubs man...

:nojustno:

Joking aside shoebox tubs are actualy designed to allow for air flow. That's why they are perfect for mush cult

You think I will have better luck with the lids on?

Sure would be easier to move the fuckers that way. Side note, how long do you think from making the tub to pins for B+ put straight into fruiting conditions?

There's really no timeline, but on average about 10-14 days.

I prep the shoebox and then snap the lids on until they start to pin then I just unsnap the lid or flip the lid over if I feel they need more air.

Have you checked out the Shoebox thread yet?

Tons of sidepins popping up after 8 days. Should be solid!

Side pins are not optimal. You need to adjust for better surface conditions.

Your sub seemed pretty over-saturated in the beginning. The darkness of the coir is my indicator. Dial down your hydration a bit in the coir prep part and you'll get less side pins.

Check out my shoebox assembly tek in my sig to see how I under-hydrate the coir, but then add it back in a top coat to direct the mushies up towards sexy surface conditions. If you want to use cakes you can just sub every reference I make of grains with your BRF cakes no problem.

Hmm. I will look over your guide more, though I followed Ziran's tek exactly, and I trust him.

I should get some decent yields though, correct?

There is nothing wrong with what you did. You asked how to improve for next time to improve your surface conditions. You will likely have a similar yield as if you dialed it in a little better.

Ziran is great and did a great tek! No disrespect intended if it seemed that way.

The thing about dialing this in is that "field capacity" or even just adding water to coir is little different for everyone. Over time here you just see how some people will need 3 liters of water for what other people use 4 quarts to achieve for hydrating coir. At this point it's all about you increasing your yields and improving your technique, just trying to add pointers going forward.

A simpler version of what I was trying to say above it would sound like "Did you test for field capacity yourself or assume it was correct? Next time ensure you're at field capacity, which is that when you squeeze your substrate almost no water should come out of it, maybe one or two drops."

I appreciate the feedback! I know you weren't disrespecting him. You're probably quite right, I just squeezed the coir while it was hot and a  bit of water came out, but I really didn't know what I was doing/looking for

I will try to adjust next time. Thanks again :-)

Side pins going crazy. Only have like 2 little guys on the surface. All good?
