cake shrinkage

Ii wipped up a few pint jars of BRF and verm, put layer of dry verm on top up to the lid. then steralized, but when it came to inoculation I noticed that the cake had shrunk about a inch or so, the needle barely reached the top verm layer!! so i dumped them and tryed again. this time everything was fine, no shrinkage. Also I flipped a few jars to let out co2 and letthe condinsation fal to the verm barrier, the cakes drop about half in inch, these shrunk too(must not have noticed at inoculation). whats the deal? I know i put enough substrate in(to the top w/dry verm)
