Questions about Sidepinning. Pics included

First pins showed up this morning in these two monotubs. Only issue seems to be that almost all of the pins are coming from the sides of the tubs. I am thinking this may be an issue of dry substrate because as soon as I misted them for the first time last night, the pins popped up in a matter of hours. I let the tubs colonize and consolidate for 17 days.. could this be a reason as to why I'm not yet seeing any pins on the top of the substrate?
Also any suggestions on how to prevent sidepinning after its already started and how to promote pinning all over the substrate?

No idea on how to start it once it's stopped, but Frank and the others use visqueen (or another like poly film) to line their tubs to prevent side pinning...
Why did you cut your substrate? I think I read somewhere about inserting plastic strips in the middle of the substrate, is this what you attempted? Not that I'm saying it works because I haven't tried, but I'd think if your going to follow that tek you would need to leave the plastic straps in to recreate the microclimate that is now occurring on the outside rim of your tub. Sry I can be of more help now, but follow the poly film rule next time, and also try to get some sterilite (or another brand) see through tubs, to provide a bit more lighting.

I cut the substrate to try to promote more microclimates throughout the substrate rather than on the sides - sidepinning was an issue during my last grow. I heard of the idea on this thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/16932372/fpart/all/vc/1
Im seeing some growth in the wells of the substrate but most pins are poking up from the sides. My plan as of now is to cover the middle area with wax paper to induce pinning. If you or any others have had experience using wax paper, any feedback would be awesome

I am using bubble wrap as we text, love it, it has lots of air channels that allow evaporation while holding the moisture close to the substrate. It creates the same micro environ as wax paper, but it is reusable countless times (just a little alcohol and walla).

Side pins are fine. In nature cubes mainly grow from the sides of the cow pies, not on top. Mist a bit more to keep the top moist, and I'd get that polyfill out now that it's pinning. RR

Okay. So removing the polyfill won't risk contamination and/or dry out my substrate?

I use 5mil black plastic for my liner...

You probably have reduced top pins because you put slats in your substrate. That is an outdated and often-debunked technique.
Also your conditions are more ideal around the sides than the surface, this will cause side pinning. Don't remove the poly unless you have extremely high humidity in your region, they will dry out way too fast.
Have you dialed in your monotub?

As per your recommendation, I dialed in my monotub yesterday and also covered the surface with a layer of crumbled wax paper. Indeed, the amount of pins on the surface nearly doubled in only 24 hours so thank you.
Would you recommend keeping the wax paper in place all the way until harvest? Or just until I see a good set of surface pins and then remove it?

If your tub is dialed in, take the wax paper out of there, you're just needlessly hindering FAE.
Wax paper improves surface RH at the cost of FAE. Monos are fine with RH but have a FAE problem. So focus on FAE, not more RH

Yep you sure do.... and it's likely polyethylene (aka a type of plastic) as most sheets and rolls that I know of are made of it. (Visqueen is just a brand name that some are familiar with) You can of course get rolls made out of different materials, but most of the time they are more expensive and are made for specialized work... (but I'm guessing your not paying 100 bucks for a roll just for your mushies)

Ah, gotcha. I'm not familiar with the brand name, it's $10 a pretty decent sized roll at my local department stores
Nice thing about a thick liner is ease of removal for harvesting

God that's gorgeous... not to derail the thread too much (and I'm sure you have probably answered it somewhere already) but how do you harvest a canopy like that.
I thought I read you say somewhere you were debating to try a few tubs with twist and pull, but with as many shrooms as are there is that even possible?
