I think believing in proportionate punishment is exactly why most of us here (right and left) think sex offenders and particularly child sex offenders should be locked up as long as possible.

"An eye for an eye and the whole world goes blind" -Gandhi

Is the purpose of the legal system to prevent crime or is the purpose of the legal system to punish criminals? Because they are not the same thing.

I support rehabilitation of criminals over punishment in general. I have a different view of most sex crimes. I think judges are frequently too lenient on sentences for rapists. In many cases the damage they do to their victims is too severe and long lasting to make shorter sentences acceptable. I say keep them locked up until they are old enough that they are unlikely to do it again. Error on the side of caution.

A recent trend is locking up offenders against children indefinitely, confining them after their original sentence has been served. The impetus for this is the views of the therapists who treat them. They don't believe that many of these offenders can ever be rehabilitated. I doubt these therapists went into that profession thinking that, but they learned it from experience.

I don't view sex offenders like most other criminals. I think a lot of us would rob a bank if we knew we would get away with it. We reason "who would be hurt?". Sex offenders know how much they are hurting their victims, but they can't control their sick minds, and they get off on hurting them.

Pretty much any man can rape someone or molest a child, but the majority know what a horrific crime that is and no matter the circumstances would never do it.
It takes a very bad type of person to do something they know one day theyll probably get caught, like even years later with DNA. To allow your sexual desire to be worth the risk of the punishment, I dont think that can be therapied away.

My victimizer's 4 minutes of wellbeing, when I was 6 years old, cost me 4 decades of damage so far.

I'm no longer traumatized by it, my Ego death sequence put that behind me, but the perior until that time cannot be undone.

Its a train of consequences.

-His molestation made me odd.
-Because I was odd, I was severely bullied in school.
-Because I was severely bullied in school I developed crushing social phobia.
-Due to crushing social phobia I missed out on just about all of life's worthwhile lessons.
-Because i was being terrorized, was crushed mentallly and didnt learn the things a kid my age should have learned, I became greatly gimped as an adult.
-Because I became greatly gimped as an adult, the spiral of nonsexual abuse continued well into adulthood.

Thank you for shoving your dick into my mouth motherfucker. Next time around I'll rip and tear like a rottweiler until you do bash my skull in with that hammer like you said you would.

That's child molestation. It wasn't Michael Jackson pussyfooting around apologetically about jacking each other off and showering me with gifts to groom me into the high heavens in Neverland, it was a violent, mean old bastard with a claw hammer in a toolshed threatening to bash my head in if I didnt comply, and then if I'd tell anyone.

4 minutes of stress relief for him, 4 decades of pain for me.

I'll go Jaws on that sorry dick next time around.

Reading shit like this is exactly why i support the strongest possible punishment for sex offenders, and can say with certainty that they don't deserve to walk the streets.

I decided to drop an anvil like that both to spark the discussion and, well, to voice some of the felings of the no doubt several abused ppl reading this, who are not yet at the stage where they can talk about it.

I don't think my molestor was particularly motivated by a desire to sexually get off, he was a very frustrated man who needed an outlet for his frustration. If chemical castration hd rendered him impotent, he likely would have found another venue and likely would have been even more frustrated, and therefore, more dangerous for the child.

I could have totally handled what I heard in that Michael Jackson interview. I by no means condone or seek to mitigate it, but I couldnt help but conclude from that interview that there was a degree of voluntary submission to what went on there on behalf of the boys, more so than they now allege. Still, that consent was arguably questionable, but it seemed more cooperative than downright molestation under threat of violence.

I think a kiddie fiddler like Michael Jackson might have been deterred by chemical castration, as his offense was more sexual in nature, but with a child molester, which is a violent offender, I think it might only aggrevate the level of frustration and therefore the level of force and sadism used.

MJ was sex-driven, my molestor was force-driven is what I'm saying. I think hormone blockers might be good in the first case but not the second.

I wonder whether MJ didnt already experiment with hormone blockers on his own accord through his doctors, given how pro-alteration and effeminate he was.

A great motivation for me to get into psychedelics was the 1980 book LSD Psychotherapy by pioneer psychedelic psychiatrist Stanislav Grof, which among things promised that psychedelics could be used to work through traumatic material and leave it behind definitively during the Ego Death sequence.

After 25 years of getting with the program froim one excruciating bad trip to the next, this proved to be correct. I was thrown clear of what vexed me all my life.

I didn’t read a single post in this thread but chemical castration is cruel and unusual punishment and therefore should be forbidden.

They're not injecting battery acid into the testicles, they basically give men high doses of specific kinds of birth control to inhibit their testosterone.

Inhibiting a person’s ability to procreate without their consent is cruel and unusual regardless of the methodology, imo.

See, that's part of it. And this is true for every crime to an extent. There is a demonstration of power inherent to the criminal act. From the kid sneaking a joint and thinking "haha, they'll never catch me!" to the bank robber who is basically taking a shortcut with making money, to the child molester.

As you said, the power is likely more important than the sexual gratification involved, and that power fantasy will express itself in some way. Most times it is expressed in a healthy manner, like buying a sports car, sometimes it is expressed in an unhealthy manner, because you can't afford a sports car.

Now what is the purpose of punishment for this power fantasy? Are we trying to put the abuser "back in their place" by flexing the power of the state to just, royally fuck them up? Beat them down, stand over them with a claw hammer and bend them over the prosecuter's desk? Or should the state try to create a better outlet for that power fantasy? Because everybody has that power fantasy. It's a fundamental part of the human ego. It's a recognition of self-worth. The ability to influence the world around you. Someone without that power fantasy is, at best, severely depressed. I believe the term "self-actualization" or maybe "purpose" fits here. It's that same power fantasy, just expressed in a pro-social way.

Here's another question: Would you have felt better if you watched your abuser get bent over and raped with the judge's gavel in the courtroom? Not in a metaphorical sense, either. Literally watch them endure what they put you through? Would that have helped your recovery, or no?

Of course not, I'm opposed to an eye for an eye. but when he died horribly of natural causes a few years after my abuse I was relieved to be rid of the tension and that I probably had been the last. (there were more victims)

That fucked with me royally too, that I felt relief at a person's death.

But, I did.

I would have been devastated if he had been harmed over me of course, becauise to a victim child, everything is *their fault*. I would have felt horrible if because of me he had gotten life in prison or some gnarly street justice or whatever. Like the others I kept my mouth hut until years after the fact.

Thanks for sharing your experience asante. A lot of people need to see that in case they have lost some perspective on the horrors of child molestation. What do you think would be the most appropriate way to punishment or deal with them?

Well the question is where do we draw the line?

Who looses their nuts and who doesn't.

Does a priest who molested a dozen kids get the same punishment as a pre-teen who molested their sibling once?

Do we treat them as the same monster and beyond help?

Do child molesters ask for consent before they ruin someone's life? Id say sexually victimizing a child is a whole lot worse than chemically castrating an adult who was fully aware of his actions and selfishly chose to do so regardless of how the child would feel after

Personally, the question for me is not one of castration but of permanence.

I am not opposed to chemical castration that is proven to be reversible as punishment.

I am strongly opposed to permanent castration as a punishment.

The direct corollary to this would be imprisonment versus death penalty. I am not opposed to taking away a portion of someone's life by locking them up in jail (proportional to the crime, which more often than not I believe the US penal system is not proportional), however I am opposed to taking away the remainder of someone's life via death penalty as punishment.

Agian, im not even arguing for castration... im arguing that the current laws are too lenient and are not deterring sex crimes. I support the strongest penalty possible for child molesters, and if that means that they never walk the streets agian or end up castrated, i wouldn't lose any sleep at night. Personally i think that anyone who sexually abuses a child is beyond rehabilitation. Once you stoop to molesting children, you are already too far gone

Can you point to a historical example of criminal punishment as an effective deterrent to crime?  Les Miserables wouldn't have been as interesting, thats for certain.  "Jean Valjean never stole anything and therefore didn't go to prison in the first place.  The End"

I don't know, I think there's something to be said for MagicMush's version.

If child molesters know that they're gonna get the worst possible punishment, then they might as well kidnap the kid and rape them to death. Leave no witnesses. After all, the punishment for murder is probably gonna be less than for molestation, and it would be harder to prove molestation if they buried them somewhere.

Plus, this fixes the issue of "lifelong trauma". Can't be traumatized if you're not alive.
