very large specimens of subsecotioides ... many of the smaller sized ones looked strikingly similar to weraroa, I wonder if the two strains met and just sort of fell in love. boom. hybrid. I'd like to hear peoples thoughts on why this *couldn't or wouldn't* occur. Pretty sure that's what we're seeing here.



last winter threw a couple of manky mushies over the fence where I work. and they liked there

Sometimes you're just walking along a footpath, wandering home, not out to pick mushrooms, and you look at the ground and see a mushroom growing out of twigs and leaf litter on the edge of the footpath, so you pick it, and it turns out to be an old, dried-to-fuck sub. :shrug:

Nice find. From what I understand, "subsecotioides" DNA is the same as weraroa. They are the same species

I believe it's specifically ITS sequencing that's been done. So with a full genome sequence, we may find they're not the same species. :shrug:

Started looking for magic mushrooms for the first time just a couple of weeks ago and I found the first 3 a couple of days ago and the rest today in Upper Hutt!

I'd been searching for weeks with no luck, having never tried this before. Yesterday I finally found one sub, broken and missing half it's cap.

Finding that gave me motivation! I went on a walk today (Lower Hutt) and told myself I wouldn't stop until I found more. 4 hours later and look what I found!!

I knew these last 2 days were gonna be good...been out for hunts on both days unsuccessfully tho, could really use a point in the right direction, was going out to try out west tomorrow...

Keep looking!!!  And just when you think your not having any luck, look a bit more... 

I found the biggest patch ive found yet, was litrally giving up, turned around and there it was!!!  Took the bigger ones, left the pins for next week. 


This is turning into my regular patch, 3rd weekend in a row ive taken from here, everytime i go back a new patch has popped up.  Hopefully the pins I left will have grown by next weekend, and no one else grabs them!!!  (Right on a busy walkway easy to spot)




Was checking on the first spot i found subs the other night (last time i went during the day got attacked by magpies!!!) Managed to find a single decent sized sub, then as i was walking back to my car, another car pulled up behind mine, totally freaked out, threw my single sub into the Bush never to be seen again :frown:

Big haul of subs in Central Auckland today. I had a question about storage, If you left them in a paper bag for say a week would they still be fresh, dried or would they just turn to mush? Any recommendations?

Some beautiful hauls :blush: Love the habitat pics

I was wondering how long one should generally leave pins for? How long do they need to grow to a decent size before you should take them?

I found a few pins during the week and have just left them to grow, but I was wondering when I should go back since it's pretty far from where I live

Mushworm do not do that. You have to dry them as soon as possible however you can. You can use an oven on very low heat to dry them if you have to. Semi dry they will last atleast a couple weeks, fully dry for years.

Finally found a decent amount of weraroa today and 2 new spots, second spot had a few subs and a metre away a huge weraroa!
