Small pockets in jars resisting colonization

I did A2G in a few jars on May 26. I shook them at about 20% colonization, most jars went solid white and are ready to spawn to bulk. But a few jars have small pockets of grain resisting colonization. Should I just wait? Should I shake again? Should I just spawn all to bulk now? I'm afraid if I wait much longer, the solid jars will start pinning.

Bacterial and too wet. You can try to wait or you can scoop out the top half or so. You need to clean your culture up next time and let your grain dry more thoroughly. What was your whole method?

Actually, that yellow spot is a reflection. I know it looks bacterial, but it's just my grow light on a box. I inspected it very carefully a few hours ago, it's solid white.

Anyway, I followed Bod's oat prep tek. This is only my second attempt at growing (first went great!), so I'm still learning the ropes. In the future, I'll let the grains dry more. So if it's just moisture I'm dealing with, what now?

open it so it get fae, then flip it on it's head. this is why we shake it during colonization

Valiant is wrong.

I say it's bacterial because of the uncolonized portions including the smal spots all over against the glass that look wet. If your other jars are fine. But these are lagging and show these signs then its bacterial and too wet.

Dry your grains to the touch and be sure not to overcook. I dry my oats overnight in a 3ft colander for korean noodles. I run like 10-15lb of dry oats in one pot.

Huh, well that sucks, because I just did a third round of inoculating jars last night, and those are also probably going to be too wet. I've been drying my grains on a shelf with screen door material stretched over it and a fan underneath for a few hours. I obviously need to let them dry longer. Bod said he puts his in the fridge overnight. Do you really need to? How long is it safe to leave oats out to dry?

this is so wrong... please don't introduce fae to your uncolonized spawn. spawning an unfinished jar is a no-no. id say  :mastershake: it and see if it recovers.

I'll shake once more to see if it recovers. If not, I'll toss it anyway.

How long is it safe to leave oats out to dry? Bod says he puts his in fridge overnight. But wouldn't that cause condensation and increase moisture?

First, yup bacterial. Likely when you shake them it won't recover since the myc that's there will have nothing new to colonize. This is my main contam at this point in all my grows.

Pretty long. You're going to run the risk of them growing mold after a while, so it depends on the conditions, but easily 24 hours. I also put mine in the fridge overnight and they do drain the remaining amount. A way to encourage drying is mix it up a couple times:

Usually I run oats as soon as I get home from work, so by like 7-8pm I put it in the fridge. I stir it before I go to bed and re-drain it. I stir it again the next morning before I go to work and drain it again. Then I load it up when I get back home from work. (See oat prep tek in my sig)

Bacteria is pretty common. When I get parts like this in my jars these days I tend to slide the grains out (widemouth Pint jars) then break off the part of the "cake/tube/clump" that is bacterial and then a good bit more around it. This leaves me usually with around 60% of a cake, and I'll frequently spawn that to boxes with frown-y faces drawn on them. I've yet to notice major problems from these cakes, they do tend to be weaker producers, but only by about 10%-20%. (unfortunately you can't do this after a shake because they're unlikely to recover enough to separate out the good from the bad grains. it's one of those things that just takes a while to develop an eye for)

I use wide mouth quart jars, which are still slightly tapered so I can't slide out and break off just the colonized mass.  However, I'll try spawning these jars to their own tub and see how it goes.

If you can leave out oats for at least 24h, what's the point of putting them in the fridge? Wouldn't just leaving them out under a fan be better?

Maybe? I follow other people's advice on this one :wink: My guess is that a fan will over-dry them. You want them dry on the outside while hydrated on the center. Like an m&m :lol: You could post on Bod's oat prep thread asking.

There are non-tapered widemouth quart jars that were made at one point. I dream of getting ahold of a few boxes of them. This is one of those reasons I'm still hesitant to switch to quart jars (the other reason is that I still use a SAB and they're hellishly hard to handle in one my size).

I don't remember Bod saying anything about refrigeration in his TEK. He uses like 6+ colanders whereas I use one biggun. They're each gonna dry at different rates but you just gotta go by the senses. Your fan and screen is fine just run it longer. If grains stick to surfaces then they are wet. If they are overcooked then they get starchy which is also not good.

That's why I was so hung up about the fridge thing. I'm new and barely know anything, so I'm so anal about following directions, and only deviating when I think I know enough to improvise. But I can see now the fridge is not a big deal. I'll just leave them out overnight under a fan from now on.
