Abstract: Casing extra agar plates outside, in the ground?

Listen, I know i'm new here but PLEASE. dont just respond telling me to try a different method... i have over 25 jars, brf and grain, all colonized and just recently finished my first grow. I've been lurking until now. I went with a bulk casing method and although it wasn't incredible, I now have a culture that i know will fruit given the right conditions. I'm currently dialing in my conditions, waiting out the next 3 days until all 25 jars are complete and i will case the grain and fruit the brf cakes. This leaves me in my current position: a ton of preliminary cultures that are completely grown out and, due to time and space constraints, can't all be tested through to fruiting. I'm slanting a few of them, but to slant all of them would just be ridiculous, especially if i haven't fruited most of them.



Anyhow, here we go:

Say i were to dig a hole in my backyard under a tree. In this hole, lets say I put the fully colonized agar, leaving it in the original disc shape. Let's say i put some hpoo/straw/coir on top of that. Then layer one more agar plate. Then more substrate. Then maybe wood chips or sawdust...? Summer is just starting here, with the temperatures no longer going below 65, even at night. Humidity is also very high.

THIS IS AN ABSTRACT THOUGHT, HUMOR ME. tell my why this would or would not work. Dont just tell me in not "traditional", or that i should try an easy way to get fruits. Basically, i dont want to waste these cultures by throwing them out or leaving them on plates in the fridge to contam. and i dont have the time to make 35 slants. Conversate!

I reckon it's an idea and "could" work "maybe" but I'd not put any money on it. I'd bet the culture would dry up and die before it colonized your "casing" or whatever. Grains or brf cakes are another story but plates

Plates vs slants in the fridge.

Both last years
Both Don't last more than a couple/few years.

Petris don't magically contaminate unless you store them wrong.

Petris to start outdoor beds will probably work not nearly as well as cakes/spawn but it might work. I don't think anyone's tried it that i can remember to give you their 0.02

Everybody keep in mind here i have monotubs being spawned in 3 days. I'm not looking to start a real bed. If i get a sporelating fruit and the spores happen to germ on my lawn, well thats a different story. but im not expecting that. i guess i just want to experiment. I dont want to waste the myc. if it fruits even one puny body, i'll know what its capable of and will clone that or spoon a chunk out from under the ground and re-isolate and then spawn to grain. I did some reading and some people cased their plates but i dont even want to eat any in the forseeable future even if it did all turn out the way it theoretically could. I only posted to here because i couldnt find any actual information, speculative or not, on this type of procedure or what the results might be. I only had the thought because i was reading a tek about outdoor beds when i read something that said "Must has colonized substrate of any kind for this tek" and it made me think "i have a ton of colonized agar plates"

sure, why not. You can toss anything outside and hope for fruits. If they are trash anyway it couldnt hurt. use dry grass not woodchips.I have put just a shot glass of colonized grain in plant buckets and got random fruits.Im sure a few petris might do something.

Do you see any reason (besides the obvious threat of contaminates in dirt) that this would fundamentally not work?

i have 5 pounds leftover of past. hpoo/straw mix, i was just gonna dig some dirt out, drop the myc in, and put mix over it and dump half a cup of water around it. should i add a non-nutritive layer to improve chances of success?

if you wang to improve your chance. Then i would use one of your jars of spawn. But for the sake of the experiment i don't see how it could hurt other than wasting money.

I don't think it will work at all. It might. But trying to use the ground outdoors as culture storage is no good imo

i would think the chance of success is about a little less or equivalent to burying a spent cake/moldy sub.

why though? besides the lesser amount of spawn used, its the same thing. Ill add a little bit of water, but my casing is well hydrated. i dont understand why it wouldnt work. and i may end up starting an outdoor bed after this next grow is finished with, its getting really hot out though i kind of missed the season here in the midwest.

The lesser amount of spawn is the reason.All you need to grow mushrooms is spawn. so less of it usually equals less mushrooms. No one said it wont work.Its just not very viable for anything.
Burry the plates man, maybe you will get a mushroom.

I can make a sleeve of petri dishes and I used was 8g of malt powder for the nutrition. So dump 20 plates and you've got 8g of malt as spawn. A little piece of a PF cake is a better chance of starting an outdoor grow than a pile of plates

yall arent seeming to understand that i have a bulk grow going already. I dont want to waste my mycelium and im out of substrate. im sorry, if i would have known how much yall hate experimentation i wouldn't have even asked.

Just jumping in to see if you go through with this. I say you do it and document it well. It's probably smarter to save the plates and wait for nice agar pins but.... I'd love to see you try it.

Update: after casing my last few jars I used the leftover substrate to go thru with the experiment. I’ve got more spores/agar/substrate ingredients on the way to get my next grow underway, and if the shit I planted outside fruits I’ll update again with the a pic and an agar clone!
