your friend has extra dyr (powder agar)? it will keep indefinately at room temperature in an airtight container, agar is hygroscopic. a cool, dry place would be best, the fridge is fine as long as the container is airtight, but not necessary. i don't think that freezing agar that has already been melted into solution/poured to plates is a good idea.

if you have plates poured, they will keep in the fridge for several weeks, however, you need to keep an eye out for two things: contamination (especially if you use a home fridge that you also keep food in. those things are crawling with bacteria, yeast, and mold) and the plates/slants drying out. if the solution is in a jar and hasn't been poured as of yet you don't have to be concerned with losing moisture as long as the container is capped tightly. you will have to melt/sterilize the solution again anyway in order to pour plates/make slants. although i don't know of any specific reason not to, i don't think freezing sounds like a good idea. it may affect the ability of the agar to gel again in the future, and i have extensive experience in a microbiology lab and have never seen ort heard of anyone freezing agar to store it.

My dads sisters moms sons son has kept agar in the fridge for months with no contam problems. Of course he always adds a bit of h202 after it cools, and when hes ready to use again, just pours it off. Doesnt ever harm the spores, and keeps real nice.
