Thanks psylohassee,
How would I go about making my own agar? I purchased a pound of this agar for about 20 bucks...is that a good price?

A pound, that should be enough to make 100billion petri dishes. I buy mine in 25gram packs for $1.59 Its something like 460grams/pound, so thats not a bad deal. 100ml Dung water, 2grams dextrose, 20grams agar and the rest water, makes 1liter of good shroom loving agar.

You could use what you have with H2O2 or an antibacterial added.
Oh, and like Psylohassee recommended, add some dung juice :) Sounds awesome to me.
Hate to throw away good agar. I would think that it would be worth experimenting with.
Peace,

when pasteurizing your dung for bulk substrate, just save the water that you used to boil it in, and use it for agar. Im going to try birdseed water next time, that should work nicely too. h2o2 does wonders but anymore than 50ml 3%h2o2/liter will make the mycelium grow extra slow.

Oh and by the way. You cannot use H2O2 in the agar when starting from spores. H2O2 will inhibit the germination of any spores. One method that has worked beautifully for me is to start with a PF style cake when working from spores, take a small chunk of the colonized cake and place it on a malt extract agar plate with .15% H2O2 added (you must wait until the agar has cooled down considerably befor adding H2O2) and then go from there.
Another EXCELENT method is to start from spores on a malt extract agar plate with gentamycin added. This is an antibiotic that inhibits bacteria but is harmless to the spores. i think you might be able to get it from Fungi Perfecti. Then cut a sector from that plate and furter propogate on malt extract agar with the H2O2 added. This method keeps contams at bay!

Psilowarrior,
I was just wondering if the bacto-agar that you use in your recipe is the same as the agar that I have or are you describing pure bacto-agar? My 1 lb. jar of agar has the following ingrediants:
bacto- tryptone pancreatic - 5g.
bacto - yeast extract - 2.5g
bacto - dextrose, - 1.g
bacto agar - 15 g
would this be a premixed formula? or is this pure agar?
