What Agar?

I'm about to order my first agar and I noticed that Fungi Perfecti (fungi.com) sells ready made MEA agar agar. But you need 50 grams per litre, where as regular agar agar that you have to add nutrient solution to is the same cost but you only need 20 grams per litre? Are both Ok, I'd prefer to use the fungi.com ready made MEA but it requires 50 grams per litre. What one should I use?

if you know alot about using agar and what it needs to grow mycelium and how you will be using it then buy the normal type. i would think that if its youre first time using it then you should buy the MEA (malt extract agar), since malt extract and most oif the other stuff you use in agar are hard to find.

Any brew store has the malt and dextrose, and yeast if you want it. As far as agar goes, I feel like a broken record when I say that every asain grocery I've ever been in has it for cheap. I support the vendors' efforts to offer products that remotely located people can't get, but if you are in a decent sized town why wait? As a matter of fact, I just got done pouring 20 plates of media that I mixed up myself. I, for one, am all for instant gratification... And the fifty grams is total weight, with the extract, etc.

You should make different agar formulations, so buying the pure agar would be better. You will need also Malt extract(for MEA), potatoes and dextrose(for PDYA) and yeast extract(or dried baking yeast) for both. Read http://www.mykoweb.com/articles/cultivation.html

Well, turns out I can buy Malt Extract right by my house, so I'm gonna order regular agar from Myco Supply along with my Petri's.

Just so you know, 50 grams ready made has the Malt in it already, that's why you need the 50 grams. And if you need to supplement, just add yeast and various protien and carbohydrates to it. But it is definetly cheaper to make your own.
