This is part of the problem, once others know . . . It can be all over . . .

Subs grow pretty slowly it would seem. If you leave pins, others will find the patch. If you take the pins, are you any better?

If everyone made their own home patches . . .

I reckon I have some of the cues/phases sorted for growing P.sub's . . .

Now to find subsecos and weraroa . . .

I just use my computer case to dehydrate hahaha. Don't have a DVD drive or anything, so I have a container sitting in there, on top of the HDD box. I'm sure it's completely fine to have moisture running through my case, yeah?

I've honestly just started gently lifting immature specimens out of the ground. I try to disrupt the rest of the mycelium as little as possible. I figure it's better I do this and grow them to maturity at home and use the stem butts to colonise more chips, than to let some munter come through and tear the whole damn patch to shreds and kill it...

As Bobbit says, it's best to make home patches. Once I've got that going, I don't have to worry about patch killers and can print all my subs and make spore slurry to seed more elsewhere that randoms can go pillage to their heart's content.

Dunedinite do you mean I can just put the pins in to some woodchips at home and they’ll keep growing??

If there is a reasonable amount of mycelium attached, then yes, they can be transplanted with a pretty decent success rate. If it's basically just a stem butt tho, then it's unlikely they'll keep growing. Planting straight into pure woodchips might work, I've never tried it. I personally would recommend planting into a loamy soil + woodchip mixture, or a woodshaving + loamy soil mixture. They don't seem to appreciate clay soil + woodchip mixture as much, although they cope.

They then need to be placed into a cold, sheltered, humid, damp (but not wet) environment to continue their growth. If they're placed into an exposed area, you risk drying them out rapidly and stalling/aborting them. If they're too warm, they'll abort. Too much sun, they may stall and/or abort. Too dry and they'll dry rapidly and stall and/or abort.

Lonely sub. Must have been overlooked judging by flattened grass in the area

Found a new patch today on a wander around Dunedin. They had some sneaky non-active lookalikes sitting right next to them tho... (the caramel cap on the right in the first image).

That pin with attached mycelium has been replanted with some other fellas. Not sure if it'll survive tho, might not have enough mycelium attached at the bottom.

I usually cover up pins that I leave for later with bits of dead/dry gorse and grass, this is possible for me as most of my finds are in gardens that have grass and gorse that has been killed off. Most of the time this seems to preserve the ones I leave until they are mature enough to harvest.

Is that potting mix you have used as a substrate for growing subs!

It's a tub of wood chips i layered on rye grain.

I 'neglected' it for a few months and it dried out.

Dunked it in the fridge for 2 days.

It pinned and aborted.

Cased it with over wet coir, leaving some areas exposed.

Coir has been infested with myc.

Put it in the FC, and 1 month later . . . Magic.

There is standing water in the bottom.

It wasn't till I turend the FC off for 4 days that they fruited. Thinking that light length is a factor, along with super wet feet, drying out (consolidation).

May take a few years to prove. . .

Find mushrooms, remove section of mycelium, sandwich myc between cardboard, wood chips, soil etc., put it in a container (preferably some sort of plastic mesh setup, like a washing basket or something, to let the mushrooms grow out the sides), then just keep it damp and the mycelium should spread through the substrate and start popping pins whenever the next season starts.

Check out my journal in my signature.

Or:

And there's dozens, if not hundreds of other threads on Shroomery, Mycotopia, etc, that you can find with Google just by typing in something like 'Grow Subaeruginosa'.

You make it sound so easy!

Well I guess it is.

My current low tech is an ice cream container with stem butts(and some manky caps & debris) and soaked poplar chips. Will layer as the myc starts moving.

Soaking some pine in CaCO3 also to feed through the year.

Nice one Bobbit!

Did you wet first before putting in fridge for 2 days?
