Found growing in yard, Dunedin, New Zealand

Habitat:
Grows in grass that is frequented by a rabbit

Gills:
Dark brown/black

Stem:
60mm long, 3mm across, brown (kind of mottled), very stiff, kind of smooth but not(???), hollow, thin.

Cap:
27mm across, brown, leathery, convex

Spore print color:
Pitch black

Bruising:
Black brusing on stem where pinched off

I definitely figured Panaeolus of some kind, I'm obviously hoping for P. cinctulus, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it were something else.

AFAIK this species doesn't grow in New Zealand and also has weird things (da fuq is the name for them?) around the edge of the cap?

EDIT: NVM, sounds like they do grow in NZ but are generally regarded as non-active or very mildly so. They're not on this list: https://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-psilocybin-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area

Heh, no not bad, but persistent enough!

Hard to tell exact species from a single specimen like this, although I believe P. acuminatus is as possible as
P. fimicola or even P. olivaceus.

To be 100% sure you'll need a microscope and a sufficient Panaeolus key, and perhaps DNA sequences too.

How powerful would the microscope need to be to see spores? I can juryrig a drop of water and give that a shot, it's worked in the past for me as a microscope LOL.

If the spore print is jet black it should be active. If it is jet black, it's what we used to call cinctulus, but now that was thrown to the wind so there's much confusion and nothing is making any sense.

If it prints black, it's most likely mildly active.

Well... my DIY microscope can see individual spores, but they're shitty little dots with zero detail. So yeah... might want myself a proper microscope someday :v

40x-100x objective lenses are needed for microscopy, also 10x eye piece but all microscopes usually have them.

All Panaeolus species bar one have jet black spore prints, and is not an indicator of psychoactivity as such.

How does one tell if they have P. cinctulus or just some random Panaeolus sp.? An old flatmate of mine reckons actives used to grow in the lawn, but their flatmate of the time was the one who picked and identified them, he didn't have a clue what they looked like, haha. So when I saw these, I thought maybe...? Ahwell... Subs it is, although I'd love to have a population of liberty caps or cincs :v

Panaeolus cinctulus has thick reddish stems and is found in manure or hay.  If it's found in the grass like OP's, it's not Panaeolus cinctulus.

Microscopy and DNA sequencing are needed to ID OP's Panaeolus, it's pretty likely to be undescribed.  I see this one a lot online, and don't think we have it in North America.

A lot of Panaeolus species have been described recently without DNA sequences, meaning that even with DNA it might not be possible to put a name on this without microscopy and a literature search.

Well I've sandwiched the stem in cardboard to get some mycellium going and I have the cap and spore print, so I can always get them checked out at some point in the future!
