Coir layer at spawn causing small fruits

Hi so I’ve done 1 mono and 3 shoeboxes with coir layer at spawn but they produce small fruits.
I also did 1 mono and 3 shoeboxes with no layer and fruits were larger.
Does this mean my environment doesn’t need the top layer? Is there any way to fix the small fruiting boxes??

It’s just stunting on all tubs that have top layer. I notice payer ones were slower to pin and colonize as well as the small fruits. Next time no layer

Yea it could be that the top layer is getting too wet, either from condensation or misting.

That’s definitely an individual experience.  Many people here grow giant mushrooms with a pseudocasing.  I use one, and routinely crank out 40-50 wet gram fruits in the first flush.  See my sig pic below.

Edit: Several people have said your sub is too wet, but you might want to check your light levels, too.  A blue light source on subs seems to make the sub produce smaller mushrooms, but a greater volume of fruits.  Try a high intensity white light and see if that alters your growth.

How are you prepping your coir? Bucket tek?

How thick of a layer did you add? It should only be about 1/8-1/4". I use up to 1/2" for PE tho.

What ratio are you spawning at? 1:1? 2:1? I tend to stick to 2:1 as it seems like sometimes 1:1 throws off undesirable mutations (such as in Rusty Whytes getting blobby at 1:1)

I tend to get my coir just below field capacity (can't really squeeze out any water, maybe one drop at most), then spawn it with my grains, and put a layer on top of coir only. I then mist that top layer to direct mushroom growth up as it likes the more hydrated stuff (but so does everything else). I can literally give my shoe boxes to people who never touch them until harvest and get really good results from them (for example my friend just harvest almost 350g PE from one of my shoeboxes I gave them).

Light shouldn't make your fruits small. Usually low light makes skrangly shrooms stretching out for whatever light they can sense.

I'd bet it's over saturated casing or substrate. There's a feel to it like anything else. Too thick, thin, wet or dry will alter your results.

When I was moving I had way shit lighting circumstances... here's what much less than 12/12 looks like from a lighting source far away (maybe like 1-2 hours of direct light per day, with 5-6 hours of indirect light):



I did correct this for the last day-ish, so they swichted directions to up for opening their veils. I had ones that open sideways tho in a different box from much earlier before I understood how to provide good lighting. :rofl:

I wouldn't even think of that as low light tbh shaper. They look well formed and in proportion, just chasing light off to the side instead of above.


Telling us the amount of water isn't necesarily gonna help. It's all about field capacity, squeeze that shit out.

Did you test for field capacity? (squeeze test)

Some people report just following the water amount in the tek (650g block, 3.25l water) makes super wet sub with certain brands of coir (people claim Eco Earth is very mixed in quality and does this). It's important to do a squeeze test to make sure it's not over saturated because of inconsistencies in coir production.

Also, you may just have had bad genetics, but usually small fruit = over saturated (which is why we're all focused so much on your coir lol)

Right, more just crappy light source. I was trying to show that it's unlikely the light causing small fruits.

Yes, my other boxes with same coir prep with no layer were fine, its the boxes that had a small 1/4 layer of coir on top are the ones producing small fruits

Still possible that it was too saturated, but not enough to cause issues w/o the top layer.

Going to go back to this recommendation tho:

Actually, you’d be surprised at that.  I was.  It’s the effect of a blue/UV light.  The mushrooms are smaller and more densely packed when exposed to blue light during pinning, according to the scientific research.

Check out my thread in the Grow Logs on microtopography, you can clearly see the difference light makes.
