He rattles off statistics about poverty, healthcare, homelessness and literacy and how it’s all improved. He says Chavez is beloved. He says millions of homes have been built despite the economic crisis. These things may all be true. I doubt it.

So if you don't know the truth, you just make believe it and state is as fact?  Everyone in this forum knows you're the king of make believe.

koods said:
But that leads to the question, how does a country that has seen a near compete economic collapse afford that kind of spending?

Venezuela had the richest economy in all of South America before the United States stepped in.  Even Enlil acknowledged several times that Socialism cannot succeed because the the United States won't let it succeed.

Have you ever wondered why we don't just let socialist countries fail on their own?  Why do we always step in and 'help' them fail?

koods said:
The reporting in mainstream media is very negative about the situation. Is that because there is an agenda or because the facts in the ground are dire?

Of course there's an agenda.  Six companies now own over 90% of the media.  These companies are controlled by billionaires (the 'establishment').  These companies will NEVER publish a story that hampers their ability to become wealthier.  This is why Bernie, though he's the leading democratic candidate of those running, has never had a postive story written about him by the mainstream media.  This is why Maduro, who wants to keep oil revenues with the people rather than the corporations, will never have a positive story written about him by the mainstream media.

Don't believe me?  Watch the Ed Schultz video of why he left MSNBC after he wanted to support Bernie.

koods said:
Media organizations have biases, but they don’t have the same biases, yet almost every major news gathering organization reports the same thing about Venezuela: it’s a failed state. Across the political spectrum, the narrative from professional journalists and outlets is in stark disagreement with what some of the alternative media - such as empire files - are saying. These places have biases as well, and from what I can see their bias is undeniably agenda driven. They have a niche audience of anti-interventionists and anti-capitalists. They are not journalists. They are activists.

Yes, of course media organizations have biases.  The mainstream media is biased to help the billionaire class, and the so called 'activists' are biased to help the middle class.  The mainstream media pretends like they're divided, where MSNBC says they're for gay rights, and Fox News says they're anti-immigrant, but they're always united in helping the billionaire class.  Once you understand this, the media will make a LOT more sense to you.

koods said:
Sometimes the mainstream media gets it wrong. (The aide bus wasn’t burned by maduro troops, but we also know this because of the New York Times) But there doesn’t appear to be deliberate attempts to mislead the public.

They get it wrong a LOT more, as our debates should have taught you by now.

koods said:
Fal posted a Wikileaks document from the state department that seemed to be unconcerned with the current human suffering taking place. He never mentioned the document was 45 years old.

You think the US is suddenly concerned about human suffering abroad?  Jesus koods.

koods said:
Fal posted a video by a guy who went to Venezuela to report that grocery stores were well stocked and the rumors of shortages were immaculate. It was only mentioned in passing in the video, and not by fal, that the store didn’t accept Venezuelan currency and you had to have American cash or a credit card to buy anything. Nearly the entire population would have no ability to shop there.

No koods, that's an outright lie.  If anyone cares to watch the video in the Venezuela thread, the guy says at the 5:20 mark that he had to pay in cash because his American credit card wasn't working in Venezuela.  It's a problem I had when I went to Crimea - American banks wouldn't allow me to withdraw my own money there.

koods said:
It comes down to this. The mainstream media is motivated by maintaining credibility. Reporters lose jobs when they make up stories or lie.

Possibly one of the dubmest things you've ever said.  Who's losing their jobs over two years of fake Russian news?  How many times have you been burned by nothing burgers?  Who lost their jobs as a result of not properly investigating stories that were printed?

koods said:
On the other hand, the ideological true believers have every reason to discredit anyone whose makes the Chavez revolution look like a failure. In the end it’s just clear to me that one side is driven by an agenda and the other isn’t.

They only want the truth.  And it's clear you can't handle the truth.

You've told us many times about how as a youngster, you've travelled to Russia, Venezuela, and places the rest of us could only have dreamed of visiting.  This makes me believe you come from a wealthy family.  Which may be why you support establishment stories that bolster the rich?

Stop with this bullshit. Your entire argument requires that everyone agree that US action is responsible for the current situation. You have not provided sufficient evidence to even consider this proposition. You keep blaming sanctions but the sanctions came long after Venezuela’s economy began to crater. If you’re gonna talk about make believe, I think claiming that the cause of events can occur after those events qualifies. You aren’t just making politcal claims, you are challenging our understanding of a fundamental property of the universe: that time only moves in one direction.

Yeah, you got me. My history of supporting right wing policies that protect the rich is notorious. I would never argue for higher tax rates and totally support corporate welfare even if that means the poor will have to deal with less. Trickle down economics gives me an erection. I despise regulation of business because we rich people are know best. I constantly complain that poor and sick people are leeches in society, and by society I mean makers not users. I totally think republican policy is moral. And we all know how I’m totally against universal healthcare and providing a social safety net.

Yep you got me. I’m a shill for the rich.

————

I grew up in an upper middle class family. We could afford to travel, but the reason we did is because my parents thought it was valuable to experience other cultures. When we travelled we often stayed in military bases, and with friends of my parents. We weren’t going to resorts to lay on the beach. I went to Venezuela for spring break because it was off the beaten track and less expensive than the standard college getaway. I seriously doubt anyone in my family has ever flown first class or even business class.

Nonetheless, Hillary wasn't going after the rich to the help the rest of us.  That's why the establishment media loved her so much.

I just hope this time around democrats and liberal independents are not going to let their disappointment that their candidate isn’t the nomineee cloud their judgement. A corporate democrat is still better than Donald trump. Four more years of trump will hand the judiciary over the republicans for a generation it won’t matter who is president because liberal policies will die left and right in the court system.

I'm going to make the same point you did, but in stronger terms. We don't give them aid to aid them, but to influence/meddle in their political systems, rather than just having the CIA go in and stage a coup every time.

When I told you there's no proof of Russian Government intervention, you insisted proof only needs to be the smallest amount of evidence, like the FBIs' belief Russia did it based on past Russian behavior (whatever that means).

Now, when I say the sanctions exacerbated the situation in Venezuela and provide an article backing that up, you not only dismiss it, but you say it doesn't count if a reasonable person believes the sanctions were justified.  :wtf:

It's not a complicated concept.  That discussion was brought on because you said there wasn't "any proof."  I said there is some proof.  This discussion is completely different because you're claiming that something is a lie.  We have to set the threshold of proof that we're willing to accept.  If you want to set the burden at "more likely than not," that's one thing.  If you want to set it at "mere scintilla of proof," that's another.  I don't care where the threshold is, as long as we're held to the same standard.  So far, I've seen nothing, though.  You haven't shown any causal relationship between sanctions and the food shortages.  Of course, I'm just going by what I've read so far, and that is the above quote and prior.  You may have posted more since.

That video posted by Ecstatic didn't even claim that the statement was false.  If that's your evidence, you have none.

Edit:  Okay, so I read through the end of the thread.  I didn't see anything about food shortages being caused by U.S. actions.  Have you been unable to find anything?

At 13:55 John Oliver said "He (Maduro) chalked up protests against him to this: (shows video of Maduro saying "this is part of scheme of non-conventional war that the US has perfected throughout recent decades"), then John Oliver immediately says "Ok so, here's the thing there - America has undoubtedly done some awful things in Central and South America. We backed coup attempts, juntas and atrocities in Chile, Argentina and Guatemala.  But refreshingly, what's happening in Venezuela is actually not our fault.  Accusing America of creating Venezuela's crisis is about as fair as accusing OJ Simpson of murdering Princess Diana."

I have no idea how you concluded that means US sanctions caused the food 'shortages'.

John Oliver believes America is not responsible for the protests in Venezuela against Maduro, nor many other things happening in Venezuela.  Are you looking for evidence that the US is behind the protests?

Context.  The show was talking about food shortages. Then it went on to discuss "the Maduro diet."  Immediately thereafter, they went to Maduro blaming the U.S., followed by Oliver's statement.  To me, it seems like he's talking about the food shortages.

If you think it's about the protests, make your case for that.  You still haven't explained how the protests are caused by the U.S. either.

I haven't seen anything that makes me think that statement is false.

Either of those is fine, as both are "what's happening in Venezuela".  Let's start with the food shortages since you think that's what he was referring to.  I've already posted an article on that:
Falcon91Wolvrn03 said:
Venezuela to Investigate Food Giant Kraft Heinz for 'Sabotage'
Quote:
...Heinz employees reportedly claimed the company’s factories are capable of operating at full capacity to meet the country’s shortage of certain food items—but that the owners do not want that to happen.

The Venezuelan government claims private corporations are deliberately hoarding food items to manufacture shortages ahead of parliamentary elections

Heinz, of course, is an American company.
