Mono problems?
    #25899741 -

So I’m working on getting monos down. I think I made the beginner mistake of not using nearly enough spawn. I mean I’m prolly at a 1:30 ratio. I got a few big mushrooms and  tons of 1/4 inches is this why? My conditions were pretty good otherwise judging by my cakes experience. Thanks in advance.

You had a lot of fully matured 1/4” fruits?? I’ve seen this happen before and have came to 2 possible conclusions. It has to either be a contam or water content isssue imo.

It’s possible it dried out a little. And could of contained I guess although didn’t appear to. The tub I used let air in under the lid so I had a little to much fae but I misted accordingly I thought. So is not enough spawn not an issue then. I used 50/50 tek coir verm

If you used MS, you will get those results.

I would up my ratio a bit as well, it would colonize faster.

Just in my experience, which is limited so wait for a few more options.

Good luck!

It’s hard to say not knowing all factors. Could’ve been genetics, if it was a bacterial contam you would’ve smelled it.

So is not enough spawn not an issue then? The spawn was of cakes and I fruited in a modified mono that works for my cakes except this one didn’t have the rubber seal on top

no. Your spawn ratio being so low probably cause a longer colonization time which gave you a slight bacterial contam and led to you small fruits. Just my opinion on what I’ve gathered. Wait for some TC opinions though.

I was fully colonized in ten days after spawning. Then I fruited as normal and on both tubs had the same results. 1 was ms equador and 1 was ms gt. They also were not cased or lined.

Any tc’s care to weigh in?

I honestly think bird is exactly right, low spawn to sub ratio left you open to bac contam, but there's other factors that were mentioned as well,ms is a crapshoot with genetics, over or under water content, low humidity, low fae. 2nd flushes are sometimes bigger less competition for nutrients.

Not a tc. But want to add, I think all those above sound plausible. Really would need pics for anyone to be more accurate.

Dude, you were ready to fruit 10 days after spawning, using a really low spawn to bulk ratio? Sounds weird to me. What tek did you follow? What size mono and how many total quarts were used? Substrate thickness ??

Ok so I used a 20 quart modified mono. I can’t take pics of the substrate because I let it go to shit after such crappy results and started working on my next projects. I have a couple hundred jars of spawn about ready to go that I do not want to waste. I used 1 pint jar spawn to 2 inches of substrate (half coir half verm). Put foil on top and checked it in 10 days. I had what looked like a clean bed of mycelium. I then fruited.

10 days low spawn can work. My low spawn grow along i made awhile back took 9 days.

This was a half pint per 6 qt tray, soo basically around 1:12 ratio. Doesn't sound too far off from ops 1 pint per 20 qt tub.

As said before.. Without actually being there and watching things getting done, no pics, etc. All we can do is make broad suggestions. There's lots of different potential reasons. Try all the suggestions given.

I doubt it’s the genetics because I have grown out the same culture on cakes and got this. . And it’s happening in more smaller tubs again as I type this.

. I got like 7 small tubs all doing this with 1-4 shrooms.

One of the problems is I’m keeping my moisture content to high and treating the bulk as if it were cakes.
