So ur saying they can't possibly carry their own traits even tho they're from 2 different parts of the world? If the whole look of the plant can be different based on genetics, why couldn't the chemical makeup also be different?

People think beer from a can has a metallic taste. Despite it having a water based liner and never touching aluminum. And both bottled and can beer comes from stainless tanks. Also aluminum has no taste. Your parents probably had or still have aluminum pans and other cooking apparatus and you never have a complaint about metallic tasting food.

But the sources from which the numbers and "facts" are quoted from are linked in the "cannabis sativa" article footnotes if you are interested.

I agree that labeling those strains is intricate and might lead to false speculations.
On the other hand, I'm pretty confident that different strains do produce differing effects. Whether it's indica or sativa that doesn't matter. Isn't that what this thread was all about in the first place?

Well they used to be from two different parts of the world. Now a days they've been so heavily crossbred that the difference in genetic make up is almost indistinguishable.

Is it really that indistinguishable tho or are u just speculating? Any plants that are from different parts of the world would have different genetics. Ever seen a Jamaican Apple? If genetics can change the appearance they can also change the chemical profile.

And basically ur saying if they're all mixed breeds now then their appearance should all be the same too.

Ah I see, well I'll check those out.

The OP was about strains and species not being an indicator of the subjective high you experience.

Earlier I posted an article that discusses this in great detail. Actually met the author and chatted with him about the finer points of his research.

Just because the genetic markers for appearance are expressed doesn't mean the plant is more sativa or more indica. With all the crossbreeding a plant could look "pure" indica but carry mostly sativa genes in terms of psychoactivity.

We just don't have access to a pure indica or pure sativa specimen to compare to anymore, even if you could tell genetically we have no way of knowing what a "pure" sativa or indica would even look like genetically, so how can we tell whether something is sativa or indica dominant?

It's all really interesting stuff, thinking about the ancient history of what's in your pipe and how its been influenced by humans... And also how it's influenced humans.

Not implying that they all look identical, just that genotypes can be practically identical down to 99.9% but the phenotype can express different physical traits. Think of fraternal twins in this case.

All I'm saying is that the current research does not support a correlation between strain or species name and chemical make up for cannabis. More research is still needed, however there's little evidence supporting the alternative.

I agree completely, and would like to see a lot more research into how chemical makeup influences subjective experience.

Right now you can buy the same strain from two different dispensaries and there will be a largely unknown difference in their makeup based on a thousand factors.

I agree with Bill that it'd be cool to get to the point where we could drop the labels and just tell the dispensary "I want something that's good for x, y, and z" and they'd be able to find something based on the science of it.

That's correct, however what chemicals are different changes on a case by case basis.

Also genotype is not the same as phenotype. The way that genotypes are expressed changes dramatically according to a whole gamut of factors.

If you read the thread, I honestly didn't know and wanted all your opinions. Then about halfway through the thread, I started doing my own research and found out I have been lied to about indica and sativa, which was my suspicions from the start. I didn't start acting confident until I read some links.

Maybe some of you should do the same instead of being offended at the fact you have been lying to yourself about this.

All weed are hybrids and the dispensaries are capitalising on the lies about indica and sativa. There is no difference simply by looking at a label that says "strain- indica" or "strain-Sativa"

I notice a difference between good strong weed and shit weed more than any difference ive noticed between strain.
