Pump up sprayers

Pump up sprayer is one of the main tools I use in growing cacti seedlings.
This is a shout-out for Chapin sprayers. Both of mine started to not pressure up. I suspected due to exhausted o-ring or seal. I called the company and they promptly shipped me new rings and gaskets for both my sprayers no questions asked besides what the sprayer was and wasn’t doing. Free of charge! They are based out of New York.

They cost a little more up front than the generic brands but last so much longer.

Hopefully Echo is just as awesome as my echo sprayer is starting to act up. It’s been a great sprayer as well. I suspect they will be just as kind to help me fix my sprayer.

Do you spray the green parts or only the earth?

I'd avoid spraying green parts.  I was very protective of mine.  Till I moved then they started to suffer and so did I.

They can rot doing that  ut it's okay to some degree.  It can make a mess if just spraying and praying.

I habe 24 starter pots for veggies and need a spray.  Thanks for the reminder.

I don't know that brand but sounds like a good company.

When it comes to sprayers, particularly knapsack sprayers it's best to go with a well known brand, middle to top of the line. They usually have all the spare parts included or readily available and the internal mechanisms tend to last longer than cheaper ones. If you use them a lot it's worth spending the money. Also do the maintenance they recommend. Metal wands and brass spray nozzles are more long lived, in my experience.

People in my neck of the woods I'd recommend Solo knapsacks.

For sure on the metal wands and brass tips.

It makes cleaning blocked nozzles a bit easier, especially if not near a water source. Small bits of wire can do the job. With plastic you tend to deform the nozzle and makes your job harder or impossible.

Good to know, I was looking for a good spray.

I plan on starting at least 20 flats of seeds in march. And well the little spray I've been using just won't work for that volume

I use a couple cheap Walmart sprayers and they work well for me. definitely been crucial for me. perfect for applying neem oil, insecticidal soap ect.

The Chapin sprayers are like the cadillac of sprayers. My friend has the big red concrete sprayer one and loves it. The plastic ones they make are also decent. Good to know their customer service is top notch too.

I use the 1gal platic ones due to being somewhat poor, and having a smaller garden size indoors. They can last awhile if you take care of them.

Some people have bad reactions from neem oil.  I think I had that once and it was crippling.

Neem is not safe because it's organic.  It can be very dangerous.

I’m not the best at taking care of them. Since most of my garden is out of town and the rest in town there’s a lot of back and forth + detours down the beach. They ride in the back of my truck quite often with a heap of other crap(good stuff that I use) so they get banged around a lot and used every week multiple times. The chapin and echo have held up the best to my abuse.

My chapin’s are 2 gallon and the echo is 4 gallons. Definitely easier to handle the 2 gallon. The 4 gallon is pretty heavy lugging it around battling fire ants. I’ll probably stick to 2 gallon and get a backpack for anything over that.

Exactly what happened that crippled you? What brand neem oil did you use and where was it produced?

It's hard to believe neem could cripple. I add it to coconut oil and slather my body with it sometimes.

Dynagrow and other things from China should be looked at with increased scrutiny because, well, lots of things happen in China that don't happen outside of China.

yeah I was surprised to hear that as well. I use it all the time and never have any problems and I have two small kids. I also spray it directly on my seedlings and they don't seem to notice...I believe you though, I mean a peanut can be dangerous too. it does state on the back of the bottle that if any reactions occur to contact medical help. it also says to wash hands and avoid getting it in eyes or inhaling it and to wash hands after using it. hopefully that's a rare reaction, but as with everything you should be careful when using it.

A long long time ago I hurt some cacti with neem. I mixed it extremely strong and it blistered them up. I wanna say the sun came out the next day with a fiery passion too.
Since that day I’ve had no troubles with it by applying it as directed.
Just be sure to rinse your sprayer out. I’ve had it gum a few up

Always rinse your sparyer, don't forget to clean the wand as well. Just do this by pumping fresh water through when you rinse. A warm water rinse once in a while helps flush out any crusty bits.


Phytotoxic reactions are more likely to occur when you don't follow the directions for mixing up chemicals. Can also happen after applying certain pesticides, pyrethrum for example, that strip away the waxy, protective layer on the cactus. The sun comes up the next day and blisters everywhere the chemical has been sprayed. Like a bad case of Weeping Black Rot every where. People have documented it hear over the years.

I'd be more inclined to believe it was a lower quality neem oil from China where a contaminated or otherwise adulterated batch was bottled.

That's why I won't eat shrimp very much, and I definitely won't eat frozen shrimp from Asia. Had an 'allergic' reaction to shrimp, but I'm not allergic to any food I know of. After some research, I kinda figured it was contaminated shrimp. After more research, I won't eat shrimp really at all now.

Not saying anyone isn't sensitive to neem. I can see that being possible as well, or even allergic to it. I always buy cosmetic grade neem from India. They test it as far as I know.

I'm not convinced anyone was crippled by neem oil.

I love shrimp. Luckily I live on the coast with an abundance of them. I won’t eat foreign shrimp either. I worked at a seafood shop many years ago. We also sold bait. The bait shrimp were usually instant quick freeze shrimp and they were the worst shrimp I’d ever seen. Rumor is wherever those shrimp came from if I remember right it was Vietnam, they would spray them with bleach so they didn’t start turning black before they quick froze them.

I wont eat shrimp from the US. :smirk::goodmorning:

I have been known to throw a shrimp on the barbie. Nothing beats Australian prawns.
