There’s no way the Grateful Dead were more influential than the Beatles. Most people don’t even really know what the Grateful Dead sounds like

The Beatles were more popular, but they were a pop band with cheesy songs. They inspired teenage girls and inspired the guys to have the same haircuts. That was mostly so the girls could imagine they were with a Beatle and the guys could get pussy.

The Dead were more innovative and they created a whole culture. They inspired all the hippies to move to SF. They spread LSD through out the US. They invented the Taper's section at concerts and recording all their live shows. They changed the way you hear the audio at concerts. They were part of Woodstock and their last shows in Chicago was one of the biggest concerts ever. The Dead's music is still alive and being performed live and they are still inspiring people in many ways. Throughout the years I think they have inspired more people than the Beatles

The dead played meandering live shows that only appeal to people on drugs. The Beatles wrote timeless music that despite your opinion was well regarded by basically all of the hippies including the dead heads and actually was the music that inspired the Grateful Dead to form an electric band.

To say the Beatles were more influential than the Grateful Dead is an understatement. The jam band scene is it’s own thing separate from the rest of the music world. Good on the Grateful Dead for influencing and helping to create that. But outside of the jam band and hippie scenes they’re virtually unknown except by name and maybe ‘truckin’

But I could add American Beauty to the list of albums that blew my socks off... wrong thread

No way the best is behind us.  Most pop music isn't good, which is why a lot of music that was considered 'underground' or 'festival music' is starting to become more popular and mainstream.

I've been listening to some fringe pop stuff lately that is really good like Run the Jewels, Lana Del Ray, Grimes, Escort, etc.  Also some more underground stuff like French Kiwi Juice (FKJ) with lots of collabs.

They're on the edge of being mainstream is what I meant by that, not a specific genre.

NO, just no no no. Their shows don't only appeal to people on drugs, just like the Beatles music isn't only liked by sober people. You're projecting your dislike of their music onto others. Just because they're popular doesn't mean that they're influential.

The Dead is probably more timeless than the Beatles. I mean, I can easily think of like 20 popular dead cover bands and only 1 Beatles cover band. The Dead's music is still alive and well and you can't say the same for the Beatles.

Darkstar Orchestra just played here once again, haven't listened to much dead in years but it was still tempting. They put on great shows

I remember one time years ago they played here on April Fools Day. A friend of mine who's a huge dead head brought a set of notes so he could guess which setlist they were playing (since they cover shows the dead played down to the last song often times)

Anyways at the end of the night they got ready to reveal what show it was, and said "this set we made ourselves" which shocked my friend who was 99.9% certain what set it was, then they said "April fools it's the Oregon Country Fair set they played years ago!"

The Grateful Dead were a decent band. I stand by my statements... they are mostly irrelevant at this point and there were a lot of better bands at the time

I'd put Led Zeppelin in for heavy metal. A whole generation of bands followed after their sound.

Dead N Co is selling out venues and grossed 50 million last year. 500,000 people logged into ticketmaster to try to buy tickets for the Fare The Well shows on first sale. I wouldn't call that irrelevant.

The Beatles were great, but most of their influence was over the fashion of that era. They weren't long lasting like the Deads

Grateful Dead are by far the most overrated band in history. Just because they are popular just not make them good. That's why the term 'overrated' was invented.

Overrated is entirely subjective in the end. I'd argue the dead and beatles are both very overrated yet still very influential. Both still have large followings, both contributed not only musically but technically over the years with how they approached recording.

Was at a festival a few years back and just happened to walk by a smaller stage this guy was playing. Didn't know who he was. Stayed for the whole set, it was amazing.

Really talented solo performer.

I think that title belongs to Pink Floyd. That is some of the most boring garbage I have listened to. I can usually see why people like certain bands, even when I don't, but I just don't get Floyd.

I wouldn't say the Dead are over-rated at all. They are a great band and their style of music isn't really comparable to a lot of other bands. They don't make their music to be tight and technical. They improvise and provoke emotion and take you on a musical journey.

No it doesn't, bro, it's just campy jam music for hippies lol. Most one dimensional BS there is. "Emotion" lol. Unless the only emotion youre looked for is "stoned", the Grateful Dead aren't gonna give you a very wide spectrum

Yeah, hippies like it. Good job noticing that. Do you think music isn't good if hippies like it? You sound like you just hate hippies because it makes you feel cool or edgy.

Saying you have to be high to enjoy their music is ridiculous and you could say that about any band and it would mean absolutely nothing. You don't have to be high to enjoy music. If it doesn't make you emotional then that is fine, but you can't deny that it makes other people feel emotion. Check out some concert footage and you'll see a wide range of emotion in the audience and band.

What band do you think has done more for music and had a bigger impact, and what has said band done?

Pink Floyd were just as if not more innovative, they pioneered a lot of crazy stuff. I have a feeling you haven't listened to enough, but they aren't for everyone. Just like the dead

Have you listened to much other 60's/70's san fran rock groups? There are a fair amount of similar bands from around the same time period. The dead were fairly unique but their music is definitely comparable to other bands.

When a music group specifically and deliberately caters to a certain demographic and almost exclusively appeals to that demographic, that doesn't say good things about the music. Whether it's hippies or teenagers or suburb kids or hood rats. If it's made FOR them, and appeals largely to them only, it's kind of an indicator that it won't stand up to non-subjective scrutiny that well. Grateful Dead is one of those bands. But keep getting defensive

And don't give me the "nahhhh mannn lots of people love the dead mannnn". It is mostly for hippies and you know it. I don't care what connotation you wanna add to hippies. Whether it's good or bad, they are who the Grateful Dead is for and that is a problem when judging the band and their impact on music. Their contributions to "recording techniques" were not significant enough to put them anywhere near even their contemporaries, let alone near the greatest who ever lived. Overrated band. Period.
