It depends on how big something has to be for it to be considered a "movement". There are plenty of relatively new bands with big followings, some throw festivals and other fun special events.

Also it's important to put things in perspective, it's easy to focus on all the great music from decades ago but there was also plenty of garbage that makes a lot of todays pop sound like Beethoven. Just like it's easy to not respect many new genres these days it was easy for people to dismiss stuff like Disco, yet enough people loved it that it was popular for awhile. You can see some of the same kinds of "fads" in modern pop/rap/electronic music.

But there is still plenty of amazing music coming out, you just have to look for it a bit harder.

Here's one of my favorite bands of all time, they formed in 2004 but have come a long way over the years, and played with dozens of musicians since it's more of an international "collective" then a band:

Space rock isn't necessarily a new genre but it still pushes the envelope in terms of experimenting and blending different styles of music. It incorporates such a wide range of music that it ends up feeling pretty distinct at times.

One last note, music is a very national and international thing. So it's hard to pay attention to the music scene all over. While it may be pretty bad in some places currently there are still other parts of the world focusing on different styles of music.

50 Cent pretty much cut the red tape on the bling era. Soulja Boy invented social media hyping and the SoundCloud era. Eminem brought "wordsmithing" to the mainstream and helped legitimize the genre. Just to name a few. I could also mention Sublime, as they made ska a thing for most people.

It's hard to decide who is more influential and pioneering, those he created the genre? Or those who made it popular? Hella conundrum.

Nirvana fucking sucks for the most part. Their sound is basically lifted from albums like rust never sleeps by Neil Young, and songs like 53d and 3rd by the Ramones. The song plateau is good, other than that they are just depressing, whiny, tone deaf, heroin music.

I think music now is more niche then it used to be, the days of one big music act who appeals to everyone are behind us now. It's an inevitable consiquence of increased variety. I love Pretty Lights, Yheti, 12th planet, I don't need that stuff to be huge or world famous, it works for me so what do I care about the impact it has?

Ehh that is entirely different stuff, though SMB has some classic albums. But it's more classic psychedelic rock. Even the earlier krautrock spacerock is considerably different from some of the modern stuff.

Ozric Tentacles were the earliest most likely, but they are a lot more electronic driven. I prefer the more funky/spacey stuff.

Listen to this and tell me if you can think of any classic music like it:


Bland Bladen - Vederkvickelse (2014)

Can't say I've ever heard another album blend funk/reggae/surf/jazz with prog/space rock.

The second song is the best IMO, but the first is one of the craziest. The later songs are more synth heavy.

In that order.  Game changers who paved the way for many others to follow.  Has there been anyone since Nirvana that had the same impact Nirvana had?  They created a new sound, a new style, and attitude.  Who has come since to reach this level?  Nobody.  And it pains me to say it, but I don't think anybody ever will. 

Forgive me for leaving out other big names like The Stones, Bob Marley, The Dead, Pink Floyd, etc.  They were all huge but IMO, they didn't impact Pop Culture and the landscape of music the way the aforementioned bands did. 

I wish I could make an argument for a hip hop group but I don't know that you can give the nod to any one group over others.  Maybe (probably) someone will disagree with me.



I kind of agree with the sentiment of your statement but it’s laughable that you name those four as if this isn’t up for debate, it’s cool if you really like Elvis, the Beatles, MJ and Nirvana. I do too to certain varying degrees. But man you really sound like your musical window is small and shrinking

I don’t listen to any of those bands on the regular, although I will mix in some nirvana from time to time.  And I actually hate Elvis music and I personally think the Beatles are overrated and stole the spotlight from a lot of really good bands during the same period. 

I’m just talking about revolutionary bands/music and the impact they had on pop culture. I listen to all sorts of shit.  I use Shazam several times a week when I hear a song I like and I’m not familiar with who it is.  I’ve got 100’s of those alone saved in my ever growing playlist.  New hip-hop though and most electronic stuff - I could live without.

Elvis mostly just popularized the black blues sound to a mainstream white audience.

The Beatles made real innovations in how music sounds and how it is recorded in the studio.

MJ changed what it means to be a performer.

I doubt we would even remember Nirvana if Cobain hadn't blown his head off. (but their place in this list has already been discussed here)

As far as influencing pop music, the 'game changers' of the past 25 years are the producers.
Rick Rubin and Timbaland probably being the most notable.
Their discographies pretty much mirror the billboard hit lists.

If you’re going to talk about a handful of people that changed the face of pop music then David Bowie better be one of them. He invented styles and genres, only to throw them away and move on to the next  once people caught on. And the echoes of David Bowie’s influence can still be heard in all different  types of music, you probably couldn’t say the same for any of the bands you mentioned really, except the Beatles maybe to a lesser extent. His music was constantly on the cutting edge, he rode the crest of the pop wave for 20 years putting out constantly evolving music.

You could probably say the Red Hot Chili Peppers were  bigger and more influential than nirvana, at this point anyway, if were gonna talk a 90s rock band. They’ve sold insane numbers of records and have had more radio time than nirvana.
And it’s kind of insulting to garage and punk rock  to go straight from the Beatles to mj and nirvana. Nirvana would not exist without David Bowie, The Who, velvet underground, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, and sure, the Beatles.. Not to undermine nirvana I love Kurt Cobain and think he was an excellent songwriter.

I can’t disagree with the Beatles. But I tend to think that there were many other major players shaping music in the 60s it can’t all be put on the Beatles.

Yeah Bowie's music was fearlessly experimental. I love the way his lyrics are so dreamy and representational, like they come to him in some sort of trance. You can't exactly focus in on what he's saying but you can't entirely look away either. He's like a wizard whose lofty, smoke-obscured messages must be deciphered one word at a time. I love this live performance of the song "Heathens". I always imagined this song to be about people living in domed cities, watching the world end through a glass sky.

Good description of Bowie’s cryptic lyrics. He’s my favorite songwriter of all time.

He was deeply into the occult so it makes sense that his lyrics evoke mysterious and mystical feelings and have hidden meanings.

He's always been an inspiration to me. I grew up watching labyrinth. He has a power and intensity to his music that is authentic. Like he's not just catering to an audience, he's making music for pure expression. I can't think of a more talented musician.

Eminem, 2Pac, Phish, Bassnectar, WSP, Beyonce, Lady Gaga maybe? I'm not into pop. There is still great influential music it is just harder to find.

The Dead were more influential than any of those bands you listed. They invented touring and even changed the way sound is distributed at concerts. They made a wall of sound too. Saving live recordings and jamming so every concert is different than any other. They even created a hippie culture that still exists and is going strong. Distribution of LSD and Acid tests too!
