A music observation
    #25783865 -

The best is behind us.  Way behind us.

Elvis, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Nirvana.

In that order.  Game changers who paved the way for many others to follow.  Has there been anyone since Nirvana that had the same impact Nirvana had?  They created a new sound, a new style, and attitude.  Who has come since to reach this level?  Nobody.  And it pains me to say it, but I don't think anybody ever will.

Forgive me for leaving out other big names like The Stones, Bob Marley, The Dead, Pink Floyd, etc.  They were all huge but IMO, they didn't impact Pop Culture and the landscape of music the way the aforementioned bands did.

I wish I could make an argument for a hip hop group but I don't know that you can give the nod to any one group over others.  Maybe (probably) someone will disagree with me.

I disagree. Music is constantly evolving, and while personally most modern stuff sounds terrible to me there's still plenty of great music coming out.

Music gear alone has changed drastically over the decades, we have entirely new ways of making sounds, entirely new ways of processing them. Literally anyone could download free music software and record a kickass album if they put enough time in.

As for game changers, it's all relative. Those bands you listed certainly popularized new sounds, but in almost every case someone did it first to an extent and it was a gradual process that the biggest names get credit for

There are still new genres coming out, and new blends of older genres. Or people just focusing on innovating individual genres like jazz/funk/rock, etc.

The one thing I do agree with (to an extent) is that most of the "classic" albums are behind us. With the volume of music coming out it will be hard for new albums to make the same lasting impressions outside of specific demographics. In 30-40 years it will be hard to find some of the gems coming out now, just like there's a ton of amazing obscure music from the 60s/70's that 99% these days will never hear of. Anyways music is all relative, and the music industry has also changed drastically.

Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky

You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by

I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me

I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

So would you agree that there will not be another "movement" caused by a specific band?  Or that that hasn't been one since Nirvana?  I'm trying to think of one, just one, in the last 20 yrs that you could at least sorta, kinda make an argument for.  And I got nothing.

I've apparently become my parents because I think most new music is garbage.  Mumble rap?  Music made by pushing buttons and spinning nobs on a computer?  I mean sometimes it sounds cool, but I don't actually have respect for it.

Death Grips baby.

Not to be nitpicky btw but Nirvana didn't invent the grunge sound, the grunge look, or the grunge attitude, and they weren't even the best at portraying it. I love Nirvana but hella overrated band. They were just easily accessible and appealed to the masses.

Yeah he was big but to say he is in the same category as those others is just not accurate.  In 30 yrs will people still be talking about JB or listening to his music?  NFW.

30 yrs from now will people know Smells Like Teen Spirit?  Will they still play it on the radio?  Or will they recognize the album cover of Nevermind?  Hell yeah they will.

Maybe if you lived in Seattle at the time people would argue that they did not invent the genre.  But I was a teenager when Nirvana first got big and in my memory, they were the first.

Who came before them IYO?  Just curious.  Whoever they were, they didnt last nor did they leave the same imprint.

Pantera started a revolution in metal.

I almost listed Metallica but I don't think they stood the test of time - at least not in the states.  I hear they still have a HUGE following in Europe though.

Pantera over Metallica?  Please explain.

Well to state the most obvious, Alice in Chains, maybe? Other than that I mean, Nirvan really came a little bit late to the grunge scene if anything. They certainly popularized it to the mainstream (however with major help from AiC, Pearl Jam, etc). But grunge was well established both sound wise and culturally by the time Nirvana was making Bleach. Hence Kurt already wearing shirts that say shit like "Grunge is dead" by the time Nevermind came out.

Bleach was more sludge metal and Melvins influenced, Nevermind was much more accessible and poppier, with punk and grunge influence. By In Utero, they had fallen into their grunge sound. But only after they had already made their mark on music. So again, absolutely love Nirvana. But they were far from revolutionary and far from the pioneers that they are often credited as.

Forgot about Alice in Chains.  Just did a quick wiki research and both Nirvana and Alice In Chains were formed in 1987 :themoreyouknow:

So did they share in creating the genre?

Edit:  Im not solely arguing that they created the genre or the new sound.  But they definitely had the biggest impact in pop culture and the landscape of music.  When, if ever, will the world be so in love with a new band/sound again like we were with Nirvana?  I argue never.

No, they had a share in popularizing it. Like I said, there were plenty of bands before them, like Green River, the pre-catalyst for Mudhoney. And most famously Soundgarden. Bands like them formed the sound. Bands like Nirvana and AiC made their own versions. Nirvana straying the furthest from the original sound. In a good way, imo. But not in a way where their influences weren't on their sleeve 24/7. Great band. Not pioneers of a genre. More like poster children.

Meshuggah created a small movement. They created a sound which everyone started copying in different forms people called "djent". Then animals as leaders came out, and tesseract, and scale the summit and some others. Then everyone did it and it got really watered down and what was once considered progressive is now just the same old boring djent sound. But that was really a sub genre of metal and never became mainstream.

The pop or mainstream stuff now days is really shitty and I hope a new band will come out and change everything again. Something with real actual musical instruments to bring that style back. It's not over yet. People will get tired of electronic music soon I hope.

I hope you're right.  I think what got me thinking about this was from watching the movie Bohemian Rhapsody recently and then doing a lot of reading and listening of the band ever since.  It's pretty fucking cool what these guys did and when they did it.  I still get eargasms from some of their stuff - nearly 40 yrs later.
