Jar bruise blue after shaking

I put some Puerto Rican spores to agar, transferred 2 times, then used the 10 clean plates to jars. I used half of them in shoe boxes, and they are doing fine. Heres a pic of one now.



The other 5 I just left sitting around until today, like 2-3 weeks later. I decided to make them into shoe boxes too. I noticed they are looked super white and thick. They were harder to break up then usual. I left them sitting, all broken up, while I did other shit. They looked normal and white. When I came back, they were starting to look gray, and I got sketched out. Damn a contamination. But then a little while later I checked again and they were turning blue.





Now I'm thinking maybe its not contamination, rather I just let the jar get really consolidated, and the color changing is ok. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this?

One of the jars I smacked a couple times but stopped short of breaking it up. I checked that one and it looks like its turning blue where the mycelium smacked against the glass.

You guys think this is good spawn? I already put them into individual shoeboxes, so Im bound to find out soon.



*looking at the photos, they definitely look less blue then in person. I think its a problem with how I was taking the photo. Its for sure a dark blue in lots of places.

Oh woh that looks really odd. You have more experience than me mr. virtuous but i wud see how it recovers, or if it recovers. I too havent ever seen this. I feel like it's possible that particular mycelium is jst old.

It’s definitely just bruising. I have alacabenzi that bruises from germination and AA+ that doesn’t bruise on the mycelium.  Some do some don’t :shrug:

Bruising in spawn is never a good sign. Usually it's because of bacteria. Especially in ops case. The last jar has at least bacteria. Potentially moldy too. If the last jar has that much shit, and the other jars are bruising that much, clearly the op has bacteria issues. The other thing that can cause bruising is dryness. Keep in mind this is for cubes. Other species like pans can bruise normally.

that jar looked much better before I smacked it around a few times, seeing if it would break up easy or hard like the others. Its a bit tore up from that. Heres a pic of the second jar this morning.. seems to have turned back white and is recovering. I don't doubt these jars may be bacterial or fucked or something, but it did seem strange. These PR's have looked strange ever since I put them to agar, very fast fluffy growth, and I did syringe to agar multiple times and cleaned/transferred. But they have been the fastest/best fruiters I have, and their tubs don't look contaminated at all, so I figured maybe this particular variety is strange? :shrug:


*just as added note. These jars were being broken up to make tubs, not to re colonize. I've shaken many jars and never seen any bruising, only these particular PR jars that I left after colonization for a couple weeks. They looked like they had shrunk a bit, and the jars seemed a bit wetter than usual. Looked like the damn things might start fruiting in the jar.

It's not unusual for jars that have been left fully colonized for a long time to bruise when shaken.

So you think bruising is healthy? Pfft get outta here. Bruising is from either bacteria or dry AF. I wouldn't call either of those healthy. Especially ops jar. If you've grown with shit looking like this, and had fruits and everything, chances are you had a strong enough culture that could push fruits out, despite having bacterial spawn. That's pretty normal tbh. I've had plenty of bacterial grows go fine. Just look here:

Bruising hasn't been proven to be psilocybin and I'd bet money it isn't that at all. Many mushrooms bruise many different colours. They all have something in common, it's enzymes breaking pigments down. Cubes have quinones in them (a pigment) that can go blue, and not to mention the double bond wavelength that is read is the same as quinones. Id get really into it with you, but I'll just leave links instead.

This would be months down the line tho.. I doubt ops jar is a few months old. Enough time for enough moisture to leave the jar.

If you're getting bruising like this after only a month or so, and you're growing cubes, you're growing bacteria. You guys can try to tell me that this guys jars are clean as much as you want. This ops jars are bacterial AF.

I let these jars sit, they looked a little sketch, decided fuck it I’ll individually shoebox them and see what happens. It got admittedly much more sketch after I shook them and saw the change. But the experiment is running! Bacterial? most likely.

I definitely respect the words of the TCs and defer to their judgement. Will it still be worth it? Don’t know, I’ll find out and keep you all informed! The early jars from this set are producing nice, so if they were bacterial I can’t tell. It’s all just a drop in the bucket anyway. :weirdeyes:

I think we've all spawned bacterial jars. Its a gamble how it will turn out. Definitely don't bother spawning jars that don't recover. The jar posted will be risky, but if it colonizes completely, I don't see why you wouldn't try it in its own shoebox.

I posted a picture this morning. That was the second jar in my original post. It's gotten much less blue and turning white again. My official stance on this is yeah, they are probably contaminated, but I'm just genuinely curious to see what happens. The ones I already made into shoeboxes I'm going to run with, but the jars "recovering" that I didn't end up using I'm just gonna trash. I've got too many jars of spawn anyways to be fucking around with sketchy stuff like that.
