Yeah seems like mycorrhizal relationships tend to help out the plants more often than not. Have you taken a look at this book at all? Interesting stuff.

I chuck out spent and contaminated substrates and sometimes extra spawn into the compost heap, then use that to make soil for cannabis. Many species of trich are mycorrhizal, forming a symbiotic relationship on the plant's roots. And, the substrates keep the soil airy and drainy, so the roots become even more healthy. The mycelium should keep the soils moist.

Ok, this has me worried (and a touch excited).  I have disposed of three subs so far, and I’m burying them in my compost pile I use for my organic flower gardens.  I live on a cattle farm with 1200 grain fed head, and my compost pile is 100% grain fed manure and spent hay that I shovel up from around the hay rings with the tractor bucket.  It has zero animal remains in it (aside from the manure, which I just consider to be dirt) and produces heat year round, like it would steam if I went out and grabbed a bucket of compost from it.

I had assumed that the hot compost would digest the subs, I mean, it will decompose everything but the teeth within two weeks if I stirred a dead cow into it.

Now, I’m not so sure.

It’s a six foot tall pile of compost that is probably fifteen foot across.  Do you think the whole thing could colonize during the spring and summer months?  Should I worry about having a mountain of mushrooms?

I would say it is 3-5 inches thick.


If it is in a compost pile, I would think the composting heat would kill the mycelium. Keep in mind that a pile outside could become water logged from rain. My mix was just moist. I actually hydrated some when I added the bag of sketchy bacterial spawn.

I should also mention that the subs were only dumped a couple days prior and went one flush and dumped. I wasn't going for 2nd flushes at the time. So it probably had some vigor in it still.

Looks like I will have 3 to pick later tonight and some tomorrow morning. I don't care if they drop a few spores, I want to let caps open enough that they look really nice, after all this wasn't planned so fuck it fi they drop spores, I want mature shrooms.

At some point I intend to repeat this intentionally and see what happens, that is if I have time in life. Spring is coming up and will be time to work land soon.

Really cool, was actually thinking about doing this with some morels, just blend up a few mush with some light grain water and spread over a big bed like this indoors. Considering your using spent subs, maybe i should still do things traditionally before i get crazy.
