Re: Bulk Straw growing, several serious questions?

At least one pint per spuare foot for spawn is an adequate amount. I could not image needing more that 10 quart jars for a 33 gallon tub, but as far as potency is concerned the extra grain spawn will boost performance.

With the casing and the an occasional mist humidity should be ok

My friend has Hawks australian pinning like crazy on straw, but many other strains work just as well.

Also check out my straw update just posted a few days ago for an alternative humidity setup. Hope this helps

Good choice in growing on straw! I have been growing on straw for a while now and I hope my info helps. I have grown Mazatapec's, Mexi-cub's, Equador's,"A" strain, and Panaeolus Tropicalis.
Mazatapec's: They are slow to fruit on straw but have massive flushes. The stems are mostly flesh ,little water. The caps average quarter size and they tend to be around 5-6 inches in height. Very visual and potent. Each flush was massive. Very good for straw.
Mexi-cub's, They too are a little slow, not as slow as Mazatapec's. They have moderate flushes but the size is what is impressive. They tend to grow good flesh not much water 4-5 inch stalks with a huge coffee cup size cap. Take a little longer to recoperate inbetween flushes. Very visual. A good straw grower.
Equador's: Fast colonizer in straw. Good size cluster flushes. The stalks tend to be skinny though with only nickel to some quarter size caps. Makes up for it in potentcy though. Fruits average around 4 inches in height. Quick recovery time between flushes as well.
"A" Strain: One of my favorites for straw. It's as if this was made to grow on straw. The flushes are huge with most fruits reaching 8 inches in height with some caps bigger than coffee cup. The stalks are thick, crisp like celary. And good recovery time between flushes. The potency is mild with some visuals but no nausea. Excellent straw grower.
Panaeolus: Unless you have access to manure to mix with straw, I wouldnt even attempt to grow on just straw alone. Very dissapointing flushes with fruits not even 2 to 3 inches high and almost pinn-like caps. they are potent though. But to get their full growth potential add manure to your straw.
2) I use a cool mist humidifier 15 minutes ever four days only. Straw seems to retain moisture very well especially with a casing layer. I do hand spray the grow chamber a few times after each flush.
3)I have never used sterilized casing . I only use vermiculite also. I sprinkle about 1/4 inch onto the straw after it has been covered by white growth.
4)I use a 55 gal. rubbermaid chamber and I only use one quart jar full of spawn. All it takes is one grain, or birdseed covered with white growth to serve as an innoculation point. I guess that the more spawn you use the less grwing time it takes. Right now I average around three weeks from the time I spawn the straw until pinn formation.

The all knowing all powerfull real shroom god Paul Stamets recomends 2 cups per square foot to a 9 inch depth. I hope that helps.
