straw casing question
    #684468 - 06/17/02 06:18 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

ok i crumbled up this flushed out casing in a flower pot with straw in it (i put layer of straw then layer of casing then layer of straw and so on and so fourth until i reached the top of the pot i finished it off with straw) Ive been keeping it misted and the mycelium is starting to overtake some of the hay. so my question is i know that straw isnt high in nutrients so am i just wasting my time by not having a large straw bed?

all other factors being ideal, you are doing fine. i recomend that you put a layer of casing on top of the straw. mist with 9 to 1 dilute hydrogen peroxide too.

I have had real good results with straw. It provides some great flushes, second only to manure i hear. As a tip though, after you case with coir or whatever make sure no straw is poking up and out of the casing. This provides oppourtunities for contams.

my fire ants have bigger and more numerous flushs with straight straw then even with manure although sheep manure seems more promising.
