compost without casing question

well i was wondering if you are using compost and not using a casing layer if you should put it in the fruiting chamber before its fully colonized...cause my friends compost is on its 17th day and the top is not fully colonized but the sides are. its a small tary of it too just thick.any comments?

I usually take like 3 lbs of compost and 1 spawn bag of rye and mix them up in a big lasagna pan cover it with foil, poke holes then put in the terrarium with no light and its usually colonized in like 5 days then I just start giving it light, then after first flush put some coco on it. RoadKill suggests you fruit without casing for the first flush, I took his advice and it works great.
