O yea unpasteurized bagged "Garden Soil"!

So you just mix the spawn with the garden soil and cased with verm?

It is a little more complex than that and I guess I will just fill you guys in.

Ok so a while back I needed a mix for 9 weed clones. I went to the local Wal-Mart and they had these bags of certified organic garden soil on sale for $2, and each bag was 2 Cubic Ft. This was NOT a potting mix, but I would amend it. OK so I bucket-tek 2 bricks of coir to mix in, I didn't have much to spare. I had some unused potting mix and seed starting mix I threw in. This wasn't enough and I started getting into my vermiculite, but quickly realized that that the amount of amendment I wanted would use up way to much of the verm. So I went to my old sub trash can, that I dump into when emptying tubs. I pulled out 3-4 big monotub worth of subs and broke them up and put them in there. I didn't see any mold on any of it.

So I mixed it all up for weed plants! I planted my weed plants and about a week later I went to go water the plants. Now when I water I always break loose the top half inch of the mix to allow for better watering. I noticed that I was popping up chunks if mycelium and realize through inspection that I had cube mycelium colonizing my weed plant pots. I though cool maybe I will get a few shrooms from my weed grow, but doubt it as I keep the top soil from crusting and this will keep pins from forming.

So about a week goes by and it dawns on me that I am fucking dumb and still had a big pile of that mix wrapped up in a tarp. I wanted top see if anything was going on with the soil and shit WAS happening from the old sub. This is what I found, I took those pics that day and shared with close friends on here.

I was shocked that old subs did that. So I got to thinking and had one bag of sketchy spawn that was to sketchy for me to spawn to a tub. So I said fuck it and mixed it in with this to see fi it would help speed up colonization and add some nutrition. Then I put this tent over it and have only misted a few times, casing helps. Its been 2-3 weeks now and shit is popping up. What can I say I know how to grow shrooms and this grow is using natural biological balance to work. This is like an outdoor grow brought inside. NO pasteurization or anything, just microbes and shit in there doing their job.

This part of the basement is like 60f so it has been producing some heat for itself, but its has been a little slow. I stuck a heat lamp bulb in the light socket above it earlier to see if that helps a little.

I've often wondered about doing something like this...on purpose. Lol

I have a rose garden under my deck that is about 10×10 with a large rose bush in the middle. I have been dumping spent sub, contaminated jars, and any other organic waste from growing shrooms.

All summer the thing pumps out monster flushes. Thought it would be cool to dig up a bunch of soil from that garden and grow it in the winter the same way. Maybe next year!

Edit: here's a pic of my trash can bed...lol

I used bags of organic certified, labeled garden soil, but to me it looked like nothing but various organic matter mixed and composted. I scored them at Wal-Mart.

With the amount of spawn I put in here, I really think the garden soil is providing nutrition. I bet that big fucker ends up 6 inches tall. This thing is going to pump out some nice fruits and I will track the weights to see if it happens to produce some thing of note.

Any more I look at my indoor grows as test runs for my outdoor beds. I seem to get WAY more production outdoor.

Here's an example:
I spawned 3 qts. of colonized grain in a fresh outdoor bed last summer, at the same time I spawned 6 qts. to a 66 qt. tub. I got 7+ ozs out of the outdoor bed on the first flush, about 5 1/2 ozs from the tub.

Makes me wonder about the future of indoor growing? Maybe big beds of unpasteurized soil, horse poo, and straw will be the next big thing? Lol, who knows.

It has to be, as I call it, biologically stable. Organic certified compost and garden soil will have been composted at proper temps so to kill off bad shit, and allow beneficial microbes to thrive. I really think those beneficial microbes, from proper temp held compost, are key to this working. So for this to be the next stage, the grower will need a deep understanding of organic farming, and beneficial microbes. Look into how big scale farmers, who grow the white grocery store mushrooms, make their own compost to achieve this.

I totally agree with this. Just like the human microbiome, your soil needs to have a varied tapestry of beneficial bacteria and the like. I used to get garden soil from a local supplier that was some ratio of just topsoil and mushroom compost. The mushroom compost is really just an ideal sub for mushrooms that uses natural pasteurization, like you were talking about, to arrive at the ideal collection of microbes.

It's funny that I wasn't even trying to grow mushrooms and had some pop up in my garden beds from time to time. I may inoculate some of my garden with some grains this year just to see what happens.

That's amazing. Guess we could try this here in the Netherlands in the spring and summertime too. Does anybody know if cubensis mycelium can survive light winter frost?

I have it from a good source that they had some jars of spawn survive a freeze. I would think you could get it to, especially if you covered with some organic matter to hold in heat during frost. Or just treat it as an annual, and re start beds each spring once threat of frost has passed.

Thanks for your reply! We're definitely going to try this once we have old subs to ditch. Guess a thick layer of rye straw will usually keep the frost away from the mycelium as strong frost has more or less become a thing of the past over here

Keep in mind a healthy culture should produce a little heat. This grow is in a tent and I am sure it is holding in heat, helping it out.

IF your some where that it wouldn't draw to much attention, you could use a poly low tunnel like you would to protect garden vegetables in the cold. They hold in heat for sure.

I have thought about actually spawning cubes into my garden around vegetable plants, sort of intercropping. My 9 weed plants in the same mix as this grow are thriving. Not sure how much the cube mycelium in those pots is helping out, but man they are happy as fuck.

The mycelium becomes an information network for all plants 'connected' according to recent discoveries. Not just the magic but any fungi seem to be very beneficial for any plants and trees around. As we also grow our own veggies a low polytunnel won't arouse any suspicions and mushroom cultivation is not illegal over here, though it's not like I'm telling anybody
