Filter Questions for Laminar Flow
    #25696280 -

Hey guys, I've been researching building a laminar flow hood.  I know I need to chose a HEPA filter and a pre-filter then determine their static pressures in order to select the correct blower fan.

I've found there are micron filters and mini-pleat micron filters.  From what I've read the pleat filters provide the same efficiency and filtration as the regular ones.  The only difference is they reduce resistance and provide greater airflow.  I'm sorry for the ignorance, but I thought resistance is key to creating laminar flow, why would it be reduced?  If the airflow is increased, wouldn't that result in needing a fan with less CFM?  Which one is better and what are the advantages/disadvantes to the pleat filters?

The pressure isn’t on par because that filter probably wasn’t made specifically for a flow hood. I would recommend just spending the extra cash and getting a filter from fungi perfecti or similar vendor.

Also filters are often advertised as “99.99% efficiency” when in fact they are not at all. You are looking for a H14 grade hepa or higher.

Fungi Perfecti was the site that offered both the regular filters and the pleat filters

Never ordered from them, although they look very legit.  Over rated is better for a filter than under.  Same with carbon filters for another hobby.  Better to filter more and have slightly less airflow than air not filtered well enough.

I'm confused because they claim both filter types are efficient at 99.99% @ .3 microns

You need a fan that is rated exactly for the filters or under rated.  You want the filters to FILTER and if the fan is too powerful it will push thru contaims.

Ok?

Thanks Morel, that makes sense.  Let's say I have the mini-pleat with the correct blower, and the regular filter with the correct blower.  What would the differences be between the 2 filter types then?

The first filter isn't as high quality and gets bigger stuff.  The second filter is high quality and gets almost all the rest.  The ultra  fine.

So is the mini pleat the one that gets the smaller stuff or other way around?

I know the difference between the pre-filter and HEPA filter; I mean assume I had 2 flow hoods. If flow hood A. (the mini pleat HEPA filter) was matched with the correct fan & flow hood B. (the regular HEPA filter) was matched with the correct fan, would the only difference between the 2 HEPA filter types be that the mini-pleat is more air and less resistance, merely a more efficient way to attain laminar flow, that's it?

Other way around.  Pre-filter gets larger stuff, HEPA filter gets the smaller.

If the fan is too under rated you are not going to achieve laminar flow. You should be able to find a blower or centrifugal fan that matches up exactly with your filter but if not, it's better to go for something a bit stronger than a bit weaker and then use various methods to reduce it's flow speed, like covering it partially with cardboard.

You can find a lot of information on the fungifun website, it's where I learned all the info I needed to build my flow hood

http://www.fungifun.org/English/Flowhood

For a prefilter you can use a cheap furnace filter bought at a hardware store. I used one of those bigger ones, cut it down into a circle and used strong magnets to fix it over my blower intake. You shouldn't be spending more than $10-$20 for a prefilter.

A HEPA filter can consist of "mini-pleat" technology but there is others. You basically just need to find a HEPA filter that is the right resistance and is 99.97 or higher efficiency. I went with a 99.99% efficient at 0.3 micron.

If it's below 0.8" resistance I believe it's too low to achieve laminar flow properly. Ideally you want 0.8" or higher.

I didn't see this post. I think that because mini-pleat technology reduces the resistance of your filter, then YES you can achieve laminar flow at a lower blower speed, so yes it is a more efficient way to achieve laminar flow.

The issue rises if the resistance on your filter is too low, then you can't achieve laminar flow no matter what. Look for 0.8" or higher.

Thank you for clearing that up for me sh4d0ws!

You also brought up pre-filters; which was my next question.

I've been researching and shopping around for potential pre-filters.  I read the RR said to get the best furnace filter you can get.  If I remember correctly, he uses a Filtrete 1900 Allergen filter, I read of another member using a Filtrete 2200 series.  The highest rated ones I founds was a 2800 series.  Would the highest rated ones be superior?  I read the pre-filter should have a static pressure of .1"-.2"  I can't find any kind of static pressure rating on any of these filters...

I've found my HEPA filter, but I'm still trying to find the ideal pre-filter.  What's the highest rated pre-filters you guys go with without causing too much resistance??  Looking at the specs, I don't see any kind of static pressure of the ideal .1" - .2"...
