These grain jars look right to you? // Ongoing Contams Troubleshoot * 1

Since I lost so many PE-Type tubs to contams early I wanna double check these are looking right. It may have something to do with overly saturated/old coir that I bulked them with but let's start with the spawn.

No, that's just 2 random samples out of 6 for that variety. Will save 1 for g2g tomorrow and split the other five into 2 shoeboxes.

Well 14 days later and lost them again. No pics but just tossed. I had high hopes since it was colonizing through the top layer like normal, then bam the white splotches and green started to show.

I'm wondering if I'm prepping my coir too dry now? I thought being oversaturated was part of the problem, but now I wonder if not enough water is causing it to not "cook" enough and contam early. I just had to toss a whole batch of coir showing wispy mold 2-3 days after making.

Made a pair of tubs with only verm to see if it contams out as well to test if coir is the vector.

What's your ratio? Do you get a few drops when you've pasteurized and squeeze the substrate too hard?  Also I had a similar thing happen to me. I've had awesome success with full colonized grain bags to monotubs.... but when I crumbled 2 cakes from jars I got the same result. I used an air sealed plastic container for food. It went bad real fast I'm unsure why as well. I also used coco coir/verm. And crumbled the cakes. Like I said this worked great with my grain bags so I'm not sure where I screwed up as well.... I felt that my substrate was over saturated slightly,.. but you say yours was on the dry side and same result.

It's slightly under field capacity on that make. Before this I was making a bit wet and squeezing to field cap when I made the boxes. I've been doing the same thing for months no problem. Only now is everything starting to turn so quick, both my cakes>bulk and my Agar>grains>bulk. Even my MSS>grains had a higher success rate than I've had this past month or two.

that sucks dude... my next venture is going to be some verity of PE i've had great success with normal cubes so i wanted to up the ante a little if you find out whats causing the issues let me know so i dont have the same issues....

I don't think it has anything to do with it being PE-varieties. My normal cubes have been doing this as well.

Martinique, RW, and now Chitwan all presented the same pattern. Atleast my current Chitwan tub has a pinset goin on today, but I see little bits of green in it and some of the early mushies it popped up were tiny and sickly.

Maybe you should post pictures of your plates before you inoculate your grains. Someone might spot something you're not seeing... And post all your steps that you're using to prep your grains. Every long contam thread I've seen starts there.

Also you might check out the Josex's needle poke lc tek.

Next time I get some plates I'm gonna put to grain I will show them as well. This started happening after I put a bunch onto grains already and was in the g2g stages.

Grain prep is standard oat prep, nothing weird there.

Neither of those would affect my BRF grows any way. Which is what makes this so confusing to me. Initially I just assumed bad plate and tried to keep on, but it kept happening.

I already do josex poke for lc's, bacterial plates onto brf pucks, and occasionally clones. but thanks for the suggestion, it's a handy tek, love it.

Those reasons are why I think it has something to do with bulk substrate prep atm, it's the only connecting thread left after scrubbing the hell out of every tub and jar I have with dishsoap and 1/10th diluted bleach.

e/ I hope I don't come across as just batting down suggestions. I do appreciate people trying to think of angles I might be missing and methods to deal with it.

How do you prep your sub and how long do you wait between making your sub and using it?

I do bucket tek . Get water to a high rolling boil and pour into bucket with chunk of coir brick, close, leave it.

Typically I'll make the night before I spawn, then hold the leftovers for up to 2 weeks before needing more.

e/ after a few pm's with Jhova, he pointed me towards Eatyu's Oven Pasteurizing and I'm gonna give it a go.

Ah ok, I missed the context when reading the thread. Seems like that would be plenty. Most of the TC's seem to think that it's almost always spawn and not the substrate prep, but I don't have enough experience to say one way or another. I use bod's bucket tek with the cooler myself.

Re: the oven tek, I'm sure that one's good. I originally used a turkey bag tek too if using the extra aluminum is not to your liking.

I've been doing something similer (didnt read it just made sense) i made way too much substrate (coir verm water) for my last tub so i decided to freeze the extra rather than throw it away.... i let it thaw on the counter until i can break it up some fill empty jars and boil the jars like a steam sterilization rehydrate the coir and bulk like normal.

ive only done two large bowls this way and mixed with some spawn that was behind the rest but it seems to have worked fine i got two flushes from one and the other has a nice pin set with out any contams so thats good

i guess my idea really is a thing kind of....

i use an natural disinfectant to clean everything its made out of citric acid and things maybe get something like that and scrub everything in your grow area walls floors shelves etc maybe that will help... as a matter of fact i have a contaminated agar plate i thought about testing how good it really worked by placing a drop of the natural, Lysol, and just straight 70% iso on different parts of the plate to see if the clams are true...

That'll be interesting to see.  Supposedly coir is already pasteurized.  But I never tested it.

So a bit of an update.

Boxes set with verm only(PEU white) are beginning to pin, no signs of trich.

Oven Pastuerized(3hr @170) Coir Boxes haven't turned green but has some questionable growth.

Should know in a few days if oven pasteurize is beating my problems, seems like the coir is the vector though.

Update!
So the coir tubs were toast, upping my pastuerizing time and testing more with coir. Going to look into finding substitute coir brand as well when time permits.

PEU White Verm only is a success! Box 1/2- 1 fat white dick. Box 2 will be in a day or 2.

Tub 2 PEU "White" Verm only. Came in stunningly. I'm so excited to have a nice harvest again. Nearly filled my dehydrator with this one tub.
