Casing or substrate problem? Suggestions appreciated

Hi guys,
I like some advice here. I have been using coir only as sub for cubes. Grain spawned to coir as a sub  produces very little pins for me. I need a casing to get a good pinset. For me vermiculite works well for that. But I like to use coir for casing because of the logistical advantages it has. So I am going to experiment a little with adding lime to see if it helps. I understand that it should help to keep the casing layer uncolonized? Is this reliable information? Check.

Another question I have; how likely will it be that adding some verm to the coir will solve the problem of the sub, per se, needing a casing? (I perceive that as a problem because I have to re case between every flush to get decent results). Or should I look for another substrate... like compost, straw or whatever?

I would work on substrate moisture content and surface conditions.
Or just use a pesudocasing of coir to cover the top and see if that helps your situation.

Hi Bod, What do you mean by working on substrate moisture conditions? Just getting the moisture content of the coir right? Or do you mean by, adding verm to the coir? Or do you mean whichever of the two is needed?

Casing with coir/pseudo-casing (late casing) I have tried many times. I will post some pics of it soon (still have to take them when it pins). But I can say it doesn't work very well for me. A little better then not pseudo casing at all maybe. I will definitely try to see if adding lime to the coir might help to keep the coir from being colonized; that is something I can still try..

Verm casing does its job well as a casing material for me... But (like I already mentioned) I like to get to the point where I limit the amount of verm I use...

If the surface conditions of the substrate are not ideal for pinning, your not going to see the results your wanting. Evaporation off the sub surface is your main pinning trigger, so make sure you keep a morning dew like appearance on the sub surface. If it looks to be losing that morning dew appearance, give it a little misting.

Also make sure your coir is at field capacity. If your substrate doesnt have enough water in it to support a healthy flush, you wont get one

Don't try to create unfavorable conditions to compensate for something, myc will cononize the top layer eventually. Sometimes sooner sometimes later.

Only way I've ever used a top layer is by adding one 2weeks after spawn. This has always gives me great first flushes and pins usually pop up from under the top layer before it gets colonized. Gl

Really? If I add a coir casing layer after two weeks I get deformed, wavy caps. Thats because I already have tiny hyphal knots by then. But I totally get your point. I late case a bit sooner normally and it produces some healthy looking pins. Just not wall to wall flushes like happens when I use a verm casing at spawn; that works very well for me.

Coir without a verm casing is not doing it's thing for me it seems. I don't even think it has to do with misting or FAE. Whatever it is I will get to the bottom of this :wink:. Will write a letter to the head pinning trigger boss to make him comply, lol

BTW.: I think you are probably right by saying that compensating by creating unfavorable conditions isn't a good idea; I don't have the feeling it will work actually...
