You can compress the substrate, but you should never compress the casing.

The reason some people press on the substrate is because you want the substrate as even and gap-free as possible.

If you aRE using crumbeled cakes I think it would be Ok to lightly compress the substrate (not the casing) so that there are less spaces between the chunks and so that the substrate is more even.

just make sure the gaps are filled, that your substrate is even, no need to compress.
