Looking for advice about artificial lighting
    #25611507 -

I am doing my first cubensis cultivation project. My cakes will be fully colonized within a week and I am looking for the most optimal artificial light source to induce pinning in the cakes when they are ready. I haven't been able to find any useful information about how light intensity or wavelength affect fruiting. I can't use natural light because my grow setup is in a room without windows. Any information on the best kind of lighting would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using a standard 60 watt filament bulb in the ceiling above my tubs.  I keep it on constantly.  I know folks will say 12 on/ 12 off, but I've never noticed any issues.

Just harvested 380 wet grams from a 2 quart, 1:1.75 grain:coir tub on the first flush using that light.

You can use pretty much any light source.  Doesn't have to be super bright.

Since you're looking for the "optimal artificial light source", you can pretty much disregard what the previous poster said.

CFL in the 6500k spectrum on a 12/12 cycle is considered by most to be the optimal artificial light source.

Good luck!

6500k cfl bulb. You can find them at home depot they are the curly bulbs but make sure its 6500k most are 5000k.

Is it ok for the light source to be next to, instead of on top of the fruiting chamber?

Mushrooms will grow towards the light, so above tends to be ideal. The side works fine, and if you turn your tubs with artistic precision, you can grow cool corkscrew fruits. :strokebeard:

Do CFL bulbs get too hot to be directly put on plastic?

I see a lot of posts like yours, so I'm sure there must be evidence to support your claim.  I've grown under all kinds of light and never noticed any difference whatsoever in yield and quality whether I used filament, CFL, or even once where I stuck them near my indoor garden growlights (LED's).  I used to use florescents on a 12 hour cycle, but after being forced to use different lights in a new house years ago and seeing no difference, I just stick with whatever I have available.

Does anyone here have any evidence from your own experience that CFL's are any better on a cycle than anything else?

Eastbound window for natural lighting works too... I don't think it's that important other than directional growth

No light will give them long stipes and tiny caps

According to very limited research fungi typically respond to only blue light and some part of the UV band...

So it makes sense that people suggest very cold (blue-heavy) spectra like 6500K.

Personally I like to experiment and grow in pure blue LED light that runs a little into the UV part (blacklight) but not the right kind of UV i think. You don't really want that anyway probably cause it would be harmful to your skin etc.

But i doubt i would want that kind of light when i scale up... it's kinda crazy on your eyes.

I should add that there are exceptions like Rhodotus palmatus which require other colors of light and NOT blue, but I don't know of any edible / psychoactive mushrooms which are also an exception like this.

That's interesting.  The indoor LED growlight I've used a couple of times is heavy in the UV range.  I didn't notice any imporvement over other lights.  The one thing I did like about it was having all my hydroponic ghost and scorpion peppers growing next to my shrooms.  Made for a very relaxing environment during the winter to sit and stare at pins grow for hours at a time without blinking, neglecting all my other responsibilities as my skin turned brown from the grow lights.  Wonderful.

Hell yeah.  How did they do?  What do you do with them?

I used to be quite the gardener until a couple years ago when my son died.  Just kind of lost interest in my hobbies.  But I'm picking them back up again.

My hydro peppers were fun to grow, but they weren't as hot as ones I've grown outdoors.  The leaves were perfect, though.  Perfectly radially-symetric, deep green leaves.  The peppers just took forever to mature, and when they did they were like superhot jalapenos.  The shrooms were awesome, though.

Made hot sauce, salsa, and dried the rest. Dehydrated peppers can be crushed pr ground and used as hot chili powder/flakes. The hotter the growing temp the hotter the pepper.

CFL bulbs are getting hard to find, if not impossible to find these days. Those recommendations came from a time that those were widely available for cheap. People keep recommending them like they are the end all be all of lights but that is not the case. Any daylight type light will work. LED strips work, bulbs work, flourescent tubes work, whatever it doesn't really matter. I'm personally fond of daylight 2835 LED strips for individual shelf lighting.

Again there is 0 reason to go out of your way to get CFL bulbs over any other type. There a few reasons to not use them. They are full of mercury and really bad for the environment after you throw them out. They are also really bright on the eyes and make terrible light bulbs for home use because of their harsh brightness if they are exposed in any way.
