That's an argument of purity.

The system hasn't work that way not since the day it was conceived.

Again, completely different from what you're suggesting.  10,000 people marching are required to pay for the governmental costs caused by THOSE SAME 10,000 PEOPLE.  You're saying that because I have a pistol in my night stand, I should pay for the costs caused by some wacko in Vegas shooting out of a window.

Yes. Those 10,000 people pay costs to provide security, whether they personally incur costs or not. The government is saying that “your right to protest isn’t without cost. As a protester, you are responsible for the burden this places on society”  Why should everyone have to
Pay the costs incurred by those who choose to exercise their rights. Rights ARE NOT AN OBLIGATION. You don’t have to own a gun and those that choose to should be the ones who pay for the associated costs.

And just for the laughs, can I ask you guys what this security force will be armed with?

I never proposed a security force. Personally I'd like to have less police.

I think gun owners should be on the hook for damages. I think a surety bond would be rather nice. Responsible people would have nothing to worry about.

The argument is simple. There is a significant cost to society that is the result of guns. How do we pay for it?

There is a superfund for environmental disasters thats funded by environmental income tax, excise tax on petroleum and chemicals. Where this the superfund for people and families who are on the receiving end of gun violence? It could be funded perhaps by greater excise tax on guns and ammo?

When you dig or construct you present a surety bond. Perhaps gun owners should be responsible in this way.

You're missing the point.  There is no fundamental right to manufacture toxic chemicals.

In the U.S., we have certain rights.  With those rights come societal costs.  That is inevitable.  If you disagree with those rights, there is a way to change them.  Charging people solely for exercising their rights is just an end-run around the process of altering rights.  It is an attempt to circumvent the Constitution and allow tyranny of the majority.

Well said.

Ya bastard.

You still haven't really explained why all gun owners are not only at fault for the sheer existence of bad gun owners, but are directly responsible for any decisions that bad gun owner makes.

Again, we paid for our guns because we wanted personal security from bad people with guns. Now you want us to pay for YOU to have someone with a gun to protect you, because you didn't want to buy a gun yourself. You just want someone else near you to have one. This whole argument is a catch 22

You are jumping through hoop after hoop to try to put together this argument that you know deep down is never going to happen. You could never get this to pass as legistlation. You could never convince a court that this is logical. You could never win an official debate using this argument. We will never see a reality where all gun owners pay out of pocket for all gun related violene, an you know we wont. So just shut up about it.

Where’s my free gun? Certainly I shouldn’t have to pay for one since it’s my right to have one.

Most Rights do not come without costs. Some rights do come with explicit language stating they should be without cost. No poll tax for voting or free lawyers (it you cannot afford one.) the second amendment includes no such language.

You have a right to vote, but it costs gas money to get to a station, and gasoline is taxed. It requires auto insurance to drive on the public roads. Whether you own a car or not you pay taxes towards roads. So that right to vote gets pretty expensive. You are paying into all sorts of things just to exercise that right. The government sure is "Charging people solely for exercising their rights."

What you're proposing is the equivalent of you and I being forced to share in the cost of that 10,000 person rally because we are exercising our right to speech here on this forum.

The guns in my house have harmed no one.  You want to make me pay a larger share than you simply because i own them.

Of course, the irony is that most of the cost of gun violence wouldn't even be paid in part by the actual people committing the violence.  They aren't going to be paying any security costs each year.  They won't even be registered.

I walked to my local polling place.  Also, there's vote by mail.

I think you overlooked the word "solely."  Wanna give that another shot?

Obviously gun owners don’t like this idea. There is absolutely nothing unconstitutional about it.

So they aren't responsible for gun violence, but should be legally responsible to pay for protection from gun violence?

We already did. It's called buying a gun

There is already a federal excise tax on firearms which is mandated to pay in part for public safety. should we get rid of that?

This is just one of those anger-fueled propositions and he knows it. He is not seriously considering this to be a valid option, he's just mad about gun laws.

I walked to mine too. Did you walk on somebodies sidewalk? In my municipality it's the sole responsibility of the property owner to maintain the sidewalk, that includes snow removal, debris removal, and construction of the sidewalk itself. Why, because they own property. Everyone has a right to own property.

Edit: and if you don't maintain your sidewalk it states you are liable for injuries.
