That's exactly how insurance works.

Near Dylan is a smart guy. I can’t believe he’s gone 17 years on this planet and has no clue how insurance and cost sharing operate.

You seem to have an extremely simple and poorly analyzed view of what insurance and insurance premiums are and what the reasoning for them is. The fact that you're going off on me about it is kinda embarrassing bro

So for something as consistently destructive as guns, why are there not costs associated? If capitalism is our choice of financial system, and gun toting people they often love to toss this idea around, then we should present them with the cost of their hobby and make them pay for it.

That's not a cost of a "hobby."  That's a cost of a right.  A right shared by every American.  Why should only some Americans pay the cost of that right?

Obviously automobile costs were spiraling out of control and now states mandate auto insurance.

This could be equally the same for gun owners.

ImpostFind a cost on society, one that is out of control, and society places controls on that thing.

It's not a hard idea to grasp. The function of the system is probably debatable. Whether it's a levy on manufacturers like we saw big tobacco, or if it's a registration system, or an insurance system, there are many possible routes. But at what point do we make the community/industry start leading itself? Right now all we hear are excuses.

Let's dispel this myth that keeps on being spouted.  There is no state in the U.S. that requires auto insurance to drive a car.

No, the business model of an insurance company is:

1. Calculate the probability of a claim
2. Calculate the cost of a claim
3. Charge a premium higher than cost x probability.

It's similar to the gaming industry, really.  An insurance company doesn't raise its premiums because another policyholder makes a claim.

Here, Koods is saying that the government should recoup the societal costs of shootings only from those who have guns.  Right now, that cost is covered by all taxpayers.  Shifting that burden to those who exercise their fundamental right to own a firearm is placing a burden on the exercise of that right.

What if the government said:  "Elections are getting expensive, because everyone can post anything they want on the internet.  That means that politicians need to pay more to win elections.  As a result, we are putting a $5 tax on each word you post about a political topic."  Would that reduce the amount of people speaking about politics?  Would you be okay with that tax?

Speech is a fundamental right in the U.S.  Owning a firearm is as well.

Speech is a fundamental right and the government routinely requires people to pay for the security
Involved in exercising that right. In DC, when you organize a protest march, you have to pay for a permit and YOJ HAVE TO PAY THE EXPECTED COST OF POLICE AND PUBLIC SAFETY. Sometimes these fees can exceed a million dollars.

As for your $5 tax for making political posts. Never In the history of the world as a word ever caused physical damage to anything. Guns are not words. They shoot bullets that break things. I’m not talking about the metaphorical power of words and guns. I’m talking about their actual ability to cause real physical harm.

Really? If I get pulled over and can’t prove I’m insured my car gets impounded becasue you cannot legally operate a car on public roadways without being insured.

Again, completely different from what you're suggesting.  10,000 people marching are required to pay for the governmental costs caused by THOSE SAME 10,000 PEOPLE.  You're saying that because I have a pistol in my night stand, I should pay for the costs caused by some wacko in Vegas shooting out of a window.

What about the ability of bow and arrows, knifes, swords, tasers, etc. etc. that cause harm? I see you deliberately avoiding that analogy like the plague every time it comes up lol. By your reasoning, everyone attacked with a kitchen knife should be reimbursed by anyone who owns a kitchen knife, because someone else abused their right to own one.

Oh, you want to use a public road?  Then you need insurance.  You can drive on your property all you want without it though.

Why shouldn't I be able to have a firearm on my own property without insurance?

And just to side-step a bit towards what Enlil said, do you think it's good practice to go placing blame this way? The deaths of innocent people are on my hands because I keep a gun under my pillow that I've never fired? You're pinning that on me, like im a ruthless murderer? Like those innocent people are taken out of this world because of me and my "hobby"? That's just kind of a shitty thing to say. You've somehow managed to exploit the deaths of innocents and place their blood on our hands for the sake of making yet another cliché political argument that sounds straight out the mouth of a pseudo-intellectual 14 year old girl. For what, the fuckin millionth time since you've been on the shroomery? Youre most insensitive guy ive seen in PolDisc.

Answer this honestly, do you think that if me, or if Enlil, did not own a firearm, that shooting wouldd have never happened?

Why should everyone? Let’s narrow the responsibility down for the cost incurred by guns to the people who can cause these costs to be incurred.

We are talking about guns. Not knives. Not tasers. Guns.

That’s great if you would like to make the argument about knives. We are talking about guns. Guns are not knives. If they were the same then we wouldn’t be arguing about the SPECIAL right to own a gun:

The argument is simple. There is a significant cost to society that is the result of guns. How do we pay for it?

There is a superfund for environmental disasters thats funded by environmental income tax, excise tax on petroleum and chemicals. Where this the superfund for people and families who are on the receiving end of gun violence? It could be funded perhaps by greater excise tax on guns and ammo?

When you dig or construct you present a surety bond. Perhaps gun owners should be responsible in this way.

If I remember correctly you argued the car analogy when we weren't talking about cars. You seemed more than happy to do that. Guns and cars? Fair enough. Guns and other dangerous weapons? Ridculous comparison! Lol whatever, man. Anything that gets you out of actually having to address the analogy.

Because what you are suggesting will have a chilling effect on the exercise of a fundamental right.

At least make an intellectually honest argument.  That's what you really want, isn't it?  You want to use such a tax to reduce the amount of people who exercise their 2nd amendment rights.  And once that number has been reduced, the tax will become higher because the cost is spread over less people.  Eventually, it becomes too expensive to ever own a gun.

That's what you actually want, right?  You want to eliminate a fundamental right by making it too expensive to exercise.

For the record, I own 7 guns. Three hand guns, three shot guns, and a rifle. I'm particularly fond of my 5 shot .22 revolver. It's sort of an odd duck.

You're missing the point.  There is no fundamental right to manufacture toxic chemicals.

In the U.S., we have certain rights.  With those rights come societal costs.  That is inevitable.  If you disagree with those rights, there is a way to change them.  Charging people solely for exercising their rights is just an end-run around the process of altering rights.  It is an attempt to circumvent the Constitution and allow tyranny of the majority.
