Rocks thrown from freeway overpasses

Do these 3 behaviors share some common psychological motivations? (I suspect they do)

- Throwing objects from a freeway overpass onto traffic below.

- Shooting a gun into a crowd, killing many people.

- Setting fire to a wilderness area / other arson activities.

Throwing objects from a freeway overpass is a common occurrence. My buddies and I
did it as kids. In the state of Ohio, the Highway Patrol gets reports of 15-20 incidents
every year of rocks, logs, railroad spike, bricks, etc being thrown from freeway overpasses.
Many people have been killed and injured. It's so common it often doesn't make the news.

Any ideas or thoughts about the psychological motivations for these behaviors?

Not specifically,
But given that so called civilization is very sick...

"The boiling frog is a fable describing a frog being slowly boiled alive. The premise is that if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out, but if the frog is put in tepid water which is then brought to a boil slowly, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death.

The story is often used as a metaphor for the inability or unwillingness of people to react to or be aware of sinister threats that arise gradually rather than suddenly.

(... according to contemporary biologists the premise is false: a frog that is gradually heated will jump out.[3][4] Indeed, thermoregulation by changing location is a fundamentally necessary survival strategy for frogs and other ectotherms. )"

So I take it as an indicator, like a canary in a coal mine, that indeed so called civilization is very very very ... sick, and what is surprising is how numb and asleep we all are.

It was only briefly that many thousands of people woke up at the 'same time', & did something nonviolent, and rejected 'the system'.
It happened around 1966-67, when mostly young folks had massive amounts of good acid regularly available. Then it all fizzled and we now have global warming and the nuclear clock continues to tick. etc. 30 years ago there were no school shootings either.
If you were writing a dystopian novel, what would come next? Then consider you could be right.

I remember the first time I was a kid and went to a friend's house that had a balcony from the upper floor overlooking their family room. Had the urge to drop something from that balcony but was told it was prohibited.

Now that you mention the freeway example, it does seem like fun to try and drop something down and land it on a car. Of course it's sociopathic or at least thoughtless, but fun nonetheless.

Anyway, I see the appeal in this behavior, even if I don't condone it.

All things exist due to causes and conditions. What has changed?

What has caused this huge increase in people consumed by violent rage who feel
no connection to others, and suffer from a sense of isolation and powerlessness.

The human mind has evolved for 2 million years in an environment of intimate connections.

Now we spend more time interacting with electronics than people, with massive repercussions.

Maybe the thrill and appeal of it is a feeling of power and control?

When I was a kid I stole the school flags in 8th grade. It resulted in a big investigation
of members of the basketball team, who stayed late to practice. In high-school I broke into
classes and stole 3 teachers grade-books, with all of their students records. There was
chaos, and many angry people and students and a reward offered for their return. I was
in heaven. I felt powerful and in control. Unlike at home, where there was abuse and neglect.

seems you partly answered your own question

and on a larger scale.... so called civilization is very very very ... sick, and part of that is abuse and neglect on a vast scale.
And in particular this is a country (USA) based on ruthless capitalism/consumerism/over consumption , & imperialism/militarism. Human values are not a part of the main equation that runs the country. This has consequences...and they will get worse.

In fact human values are not just on average ignored but attacked. What rational country would allow cigarette sales for profit? How can so called rational people subscribe to a religion where the leaders abuse young children? How is "civilization" compatible with prisons run for profit by private corporations? Who knows how long the list is of such grievous contradictions? We are numb from growing up in a distorted world.

That's a very interesting question, to me.

People cry there's an "opioid epidemic", yet tobacco kills more than 10 times the people. 

If drug use kills millions, why can we legally purchase addictive chemicals everywhere?

(No liquor sales between 2 AM and 6 AM in California) We can't have it both ways.

On one level we already know the connected answers:
it's profitable ... very profitable
corporations have the same rights as individuals
corporations have lobbyists
the government is inefficient and corrupt
ten of thousands(?) of jobs are involved
politicians like to get reelected
people who loose jobs vote against those who 'took away' their jobs
many like to smoke & its addictive
farmers in the south are dependent on tobacco farming
etc.?

I suppose some Buddhists
might invoke greed as a cause
and psychologists
callous indifference as a cause

My point above was simply that it was another symptom of a culture/society/nation,
showing dysfunction, at a very deep level. Because many (or most) folks live "lives of quiet desperation" or 'struggling just to get by', they don't take the time to realize how damaging much of the social environment is.

Long ago when in Mexico i saw someone get on a bus, without paying, and head quickly for the back of the bus, ... and the driver ignored him.
And I thought: "How sensible, how humane--in the USA the driver would have parked the bus gone after him, and upset everybody, and been mean to the person and 'thrown' him off the bus."
In one moment I saw the toxicity of our US 'culture'.
Like they say: "Do fish know they swim in water?"
There seems no substitute for traveling.

A culture is like a bad fungal culture:
Its fucking shit, and it protects itself like any good organism.

You're part of it, whether it kills you or not. The organism's care is for its self, not its individual parts(you).
