Imagine discovering ancient writings guiding people to microdose
What a find that would be!

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether ancient peoples were able to dry and/or preserve their mushrooms?

I’m wondering how prevalent plugging was with ancient peoples

Do you think ancient people put mushrooms in their butts?

What makes you think that ancient humans couldnt grow or properly store mushrooms?

We're pretty clever creatures

Let's talk when you find spore syringes in an archaeological dig. A fossilised monotub will do as evidence as well lol.

Until then, all we are doing is guessing and speculating. You asked the question but it seems you already have an answer so what's the point of any of us offering an opinion?

Friend, I'm making an effort to encourage discourse and inspire curiosity about this subject.
This is my stream of consciousness that you're engaging with.
I'm thinking out loud and trying to get others to think out loud about this under-explored topic.

I imagine its really not so out there to think that ancient peoples had the capacity to cultivate their own psilocybin mushrooms.
To you, what seems like more of a challenge for ancient man - building the pyramids or growing some shrooms?

I dont think I've got an answer, Nobody seems to have yet given me any compelling points to suggest that MANY
of our ancient ancestors didnt microdose to one degree or another, knowingly or unknowingly.

I'm also fully aware that lack of evidence and lack of reasoning against my idea does not mean a thing.

Id be more than happy for someone to completely tear apart my apelike stoner ideas.

I welcome it! please!

How far back are you talking about and what exactly do you mean by ancient? 500 years ago, 4000 years ago, 2.5 million years ago? And are you talking about ancient Egypt in particular?

My answer is still an emphatic no.

I dont think that the time period is terribly important in this argument. Homosapians in the last 50k years are pretty much the same.
I'm not talking spefically about Egyptians. It was just an extreme example of what people were capable of back then.

An emphatic no?

To me, that comes off as extremely myopic for you to be firm on the idea that man didnt microdose

Still no. If you cannot be specific in your question you cannot reasonably expect any substantial answer.

But if you really want me to say yes, ok I give in! Ancient peoples grew their own shrooms and microdosed 5 years ago.

I didnt come into this expecting any answers. I came in hope for reasoning against my idea and fortunately, IMO, I haven't heard anything that could take any meaningful shots at the notion.

My question isnt specific enough?
Would you phrase it differently? Ask a similar question?

If you were tasked with finding if they microdosed or not, how do you think you would go about attaining some sort of answer?

i think the answer is pretty obvious, i believe all mind altering substances were held in much higher regard than we do today, a direct link to *god* and the beginning of every fairy/mythical tale passed down to us technology worshiping people today.

what else does what natural drugs do in terms of profound experiences?

Friend, I don't disagree with what you just said.
However, I do disagree with the notion that what you said is an open and shut case that psilocbyin was ALWAYS revered as something magical, holy and sacred.
You say "Pretty obvious" with conviction like you know it to be true,
But I'd definitely caution against holding such an ardent position

Because your question is quite general it is difficult to answer succinctly, someone trying to tackle such an inquiry probably would need to write a thesis or book to cover every aspect of the issue. Specifying time and place would help provide a focus.

"Did people in the area that is now known as Gambia, Africa, microdose on psilocybin-containing mushrooms 3000 years ago?" could be the sort of question that is more easily answered perhaps?

Forensics science has some useful tools for essaying the presence and quantity of substances in human remains. There's mass spectrometry and chromatography for starters which are common methods of analysis.

Depending on place and time, there's also written records left by some ancient populations that give us a pretty good idea of daily life among those groups plus existing oral histories of some pre-industrial populations may also provide hints.

No worries buddy. You might have heard about the recent outcry about fake honey in Australia? Mass spectrometry was mentioned in some reports as the best method for detecting honey contaminated with other plant sugars and syrups.

Do you think it is likely or possible that the cultivation of mushrooms - whether containing psilocybin or not - predated the advent of agriculture? This is an interesting question in itself. Mushroom cultivation in those early days circa. 10,000-15,000 years ago might have been something as simple as gathering dung from herbivores and depositing onto known patches of mushrooms perhaps?
