 Why do people get scared on Trips? Poll.

When you think about, the answer to the question, "What is there to be scared of" = "nothing", and most people know that, but despite this knowledge they still have bad trips. Why?
What I was trying to discuss and discover with this thread if trips go bad because the chemical in the drug is directly causing fear/anxiety for no apparent reason
or
if it is because the individual tripper is experiencing something not normal, and therefore scary. An analogy is like sky diving. It's not "instinctive, normal" human behaviour, so it's scary.
or
If it's not either of those, what is it?
I'd like to think the latter, as it suggests that it is completley in your control, but that doesn't explain why experienced trippers have bad trips (if indeed they do...anyone?). For example, experienced sky divers don't get scared after they've indulged in the activity for a while.
I've read a lot on set and setting, and always obey the guidlines therein. I have never personally had a bad trip, but I have felt anxious. Why? I tend to think that it must be a mixture of both...:(

I'm not entirely sure how to answer this question... personally I think its a little of both (what I voted)... but I'd just like to say that no matter how prepared you think you are and how strong you feel you are psychologically, there is always going to be one trip that will melt all of these thoughts and reduce you to rubble... I have had very scary experienced with both LSD and mushrooms (ESPECIALLY mushrooms) and I have done my fair share (and then some) of both these psychedelics... psychedelics are a very curious sect of "drugs" that bore right down to the very core of your mind and being, and they should always be treated with respect, no matter how badass/intelligent/experienced you feel you are. I learned my lesson the hard way :-)

I'm not incredibly experienced(about 10 trips), but I've had 3 bad trips, all of them where when I was alone and I felt like I had lost control of what was happening AND unless I did something I was going to have a lot of problems. Those two things cause most of the bad trips I've seen. When someone takes a higher dose, then they get afraid people will know their tripping and will get in trouble for it. Or when you try a dose higher than ever, or when you try a new combonation(syrian rue+shrooms) and feel like your going to be "trapped" in shroomland. If I feel uncomfortable or the shrooms make me sick and I get a bad trip, it never goes really bad if I know I am in a safe place, cause I know I can always lie down and close my eyes and just ride it out and I'll wake up in the morning just fine.

I think it has everything to do with whats inside you, mentally. Not the drug, but your own problems, or just not being true with yourself. There is NOTHING scarier than what our own minds are capable of creating.

Instinct. Our instinct is to be afraid of situations we don't understand. Afraid may not be the right word. Call it the "fight or flight reaction". Look at what REALLY happens to people who find themselves in dangerous/unfamiliar situations. Some people become agressive and fight. Some will do anything possible to escape. Some break down in fear. It's all part of animal survival instinct.
Now take a look at what psychedelics can do to a person. You can have your mind litterally washed away. Watch everything you hold dear ripped to peices. Have your Ego, everything that is You, pulled apart peice by peice until not a scrap is left.
Is ANY of that something that people experience naturally? Nope. So is it any wonder that people can panic when confronted by these effects?
Bad trips are caused by human instinct. It doesn't matter how many times you trip, or how strong willed you are. You always run the risk of switching on your primeval brain's reaction to danger.

I think the reason that some people get scared is that you can get really scary thoughts on shrooms, and when on shrooms you think it's real and therefor it can be scary :)

I would LOVE to see a cat scan of my brain while on shrooms.We have so little understanding of which areas of the brain are affected, & in what way. Fear & paranoia may be linked to worries that a person brings with them subconsciously, or they may be a result of chemical triggers in the brain. However, if someone has some deepseated fear that they will not acknowledge, the shrooms will more than likely bring them out. The combination of chemical instigater & latent fears can be an overwhelming experience.

I have my own little theory on this.
Mushrooms produce a state of mind which the user is not used to. (Hopefully.) Some people are xenophobics (they're afraid of change). My theory is that people who are set in their ways, and have specific beliefs about religion, reality, whatever, are more likely to have a bad trip.
But who am I to say.

i believe that people get scared mostly due to xenophobia (fear of change) because for one, if youre tripping on acid you know youre gone for 8-12 hours and you cant just decide to come back you have to ride out whatever waters you come in contact with. especially if you get caught in a time-loop and your trip is pretty bad, it can get very ugly and anxiety and suicidal thoughts may occur. on shrooms it isnt as bad (for me) because its so much shorter and less powerful. i get scared on trips in part because up until the peak i dont know how far im gonna be gone, and if im too far gone and time stops, i (personally) become freaked out and many times i have gotten suicidal thoughts but good friends and a stable mind has kept me from killing myself. but im also inexperienced with psychedelics, so im not always sure of how mentally strong i can be on a trip. until im as comfortable with a half eighth of shrooms as i am with tons of weed, then im stayin at that dose. as for acid, next time im goin for another 3 1/2 hit dose like my last trip. peace

My buddy tripped with me (and some other friends) without real problems...
It went bad one time when i was alone with him at his home, before the trip he assured me that everything would go ok etc.. etc.. After a while i was assured  and we tripped it was on 3.2g each and came on pretty heavy... he was laughing like crazy and making weird "saliva spitting" sentences as if he couldn't get it said anymore... but he was ok... all of a sudden in "A FLASH" he stood there "WHERE AM I WHERE AM I" etc.. his trip went bad...
I was super shocked to see him freak out and tried to calm him but it didn't "really" work... after a while i kind of forgot him and he me ... he was going bad i was going super super good but after a whole while he said something that made me go bad too ... i got really introspective about it and pretty bad myself...caught in unpleasant loops etc... anyway
Next time on 1.5g each again at his home ... he assured me with this a small dose it won't ever go bad but ... BUT IT DID for him ... for me it was very mellow and good ...although i was again shocked when i saw the exact same thing happen as last time...him going bad in "A FLASH" but all in all my trip was really ok but b.'s wasn't AT ALL..... i couldn't c why cause it was really mellow... BUT it was tripping And i guess he just got scared of tripping on that 3.2g that now even with "only" 1.5g he got a click in his head like "THIS IS IT AGAIN" "HOW FAR AM I GOING" etc.. and he went very very bad ... i couldn't c at all why he went bad it was so "mellow" and relax .... but tripping just can give you a feeling like "i'm totally out of control and i don't know anything anymore for sure, Is this really like last time or am i going insane making it up in my head etc..."
This is Uncertainty about things you normally take for granted and can scare the hell out of you... even when i'm talking about it to him while sober he get's the creeps...
I don't really know how i will react next time i trip .. will my seeing him go bad affect me ? what do you guys think ?

Anytime perception is bent there is possibility for abstract behavior. Without 100% of your personality intact you are infact not you, yourself or what you can remember from daily motion. Being scared is part of a trip so is laughing for no apparent reason or crying .. Usual fear is caused from the unknown, the stronger dose the more unknown things get. If you can reach what people call the splitting of the ego, ego-death or loss though, the fear is gone, so is the joy. Anyway I think being scared is as simple as being scared to give into the trip, usaually caused by overdosing. A bad trip however is not so simple that can be setting, emotions ect. I think going into a trip rested, in a great mood with a nice atmosphere is the only way to go, it's still not 100% but it ups the odds on a good experience.
