RH in the room you grow out your Myco Bags.....

I continue to struggle with the top surface of my rye berries not colonizing (cubensis) with large myco bags. The relative Humidity is around 35% and 70 degrees F. ~Neither of which varies much. I've tried wetter and wetter grains to the point of bacteria. Now I'm wondering if I upped the RH when I grow the bag out... maybe that would help.

LI syringe
4 actual quarts of rye berries at 42% water content
shook at 1 week
shook at 60% colonization
2.5 weeks to colonize everything but the very top surface.

Has anyone else dealt with this?

How are you figuring your water content.  I'm running 65% in my bags and they are just fine, no bacteria. I use 40-60ml of LC per bag.  My bags are .2 micron filter.

Measure dry, measure hydrated. Subtract the 2 numbers to figure out how much water was soaked up.

Divide the water weight by the dry grain weight.  That gives the water weight per gram of dry grain. 

*Example*

Hydrated.        3500
Dry                - 2100
Water.              1400

1400/2100= .666666666



Sometimes my tops don't look like they are heavily colonized,I just disturb the tops of the bags slightly, I'll fold the excess towards the side, and gently "scratch" to loosen up the uncolonized grain and some extra.    That only seems to occur in bags I don't shake.  If a bag isnt giving me a even colonization, I break everything up and I usually don't get the top issue.

I'll do the math for your bags how I do my math....

2100 dry rye has 10% water in it, so its only 1890

total weight is 3500

1890 divided by 3500 is 54% rye or 46% water content

Which is very cool to know that you are growing well up at 46%. My bags are even smaller than yours. I really appreciate you chiming in! Let me know what you think of my math. Or if I can clarify anything.

That's the way I did my math at first, when I wanted to  measure my water content.  But it just didn't seem correct to me.

Not saying this is correct, but this is how I see it.

If one gram of rye has 100% water content, it would weigh a total of 2 grams. 

If you look at it like a complete recipe has 100%, and 1 gram rye and 1 gram water, each make up 50% of the recipe.


But we're looking at water content of rye, not water content of end recipe.

If you have a bill for dinner of 30$.  And want to find out the tip(20%). 

30*.20 = 6

30*1.20 = 36 (total end amount)

Now let's talk rye....

2100*1.66= 3486 ( if you make it .666666666 it gets closer to 3500)

So I see it as 66% water content in the rye, rather the. Comparing it to water content of total recipe.

Am I crazy? Does it make sense? Lol

I'm pretty sure I messed up calculating water % in this example but around 66% seems likely to be the end product of hydrating. Around 9% for fresh seed.

2-3 weeks.  One bag was ready in ten days 3 we're right behind it the others I had to shake.  I'm waiting on my 100ml syringes so I can knock up two bags with 50ml from one syringe.  These only got 30cc of lc in them one got 60cc.  1850g hydrated grain per bag. That's equal to 5 of my myco quart jars. 

I'm going to let my LC get way more colonized then the one I used to knock up these bags.  Hoping for much faster colonization this next round.

Very cool! I use LI, so I'm getting just a portion of an agar wedge into one of these bags. I'm finding water content very important... I've been trying to go as dry as I can, to avoid a bit of bacteria I've been seeing right as the bag finishes colonizing (seems to get really sweaty then) But I've found that if the grain is too dry, LI doen't leap off well, because the the grains still have some water capacity... thereby drying the air and making it not so conducive to growth. Grain to Grain transfers would be fine I think.

Thats why your info is so interesting to me. I can gather how much water is in your grain by what you've told me, and your LC isn't so different from my LI.

There aren't many people chatting about weighing grain here... seems to technical for most. I actually bought a microwave to test hydration. Its been very helpful.

If anyone can describe what 'percent water content of grains' means and how to calculate if you have dry weight and hydrated weight.... please chime in. I've given my explanation.

I've seen your posts.... very cool stuff. Its so interesting to see actual numbers attached to all this talk of simmering and soaking. I do four large myco bags at a time, and my cooking takes longer than people just doing a few jars.... so my hydration has always been off from following standard teks. I kinda find it a major flaw in the rye prep teks.

Reason I made this was cause I was curious. Just like you said the prep Tek's didn't mean anything to me without atleast some approximal nmbers attached :shrug: I'd like to know what I'm doing instead of winging it and not knowing what was success what was failure more then by "how it looked". If ones gonna adjust and fix problem and run diagnostics you need to know what conditions you are creating and replicating so you know not only what works but how and why.

What can be measured, can be managed. 

If we can correlate numbers to such as a "standard".  Then we can have honest comparisons.

I believe when people on this forum describe water content of their hydrated rye, in a percentage, its the way you initially came up with it. the way you are currently doing it is a ratio of water to rye, which is fine... but not the lingo people here are using.

You have 46% water and 54% rye in your bags, which is rad.

Everyone would understand that.

I speculate that this might happen from having too small of an amount of spawn in the bag, the part exposed to air inside will dry out as it moisturizes the large volume of air inside. I used to have this happen sometimes when I used smaller bags. No matter how many times I shook them it seemed the top wouldn't colonize.

Don't concern yourself with room rh unless you're in a greenhouse, fruiting in open air... especially with spawn containers... properly prepped grain will keep moisture until colonization,  and tubs control RH for fruiting (in tubs)... you're creating a microclimate in order to eliminate external conditions as a variable... :shrug:

Why dont you try slurry? It colonizes in a couple days with half a 1/2 pint cake. Ot colonizes so fast you dont habe to worry aboit dry grains at all or shake after the inital tossing.

You make a very valid point.  Mine is a ratio and your is a percentage.    I see it now.  I guess it doesn't matter how you look at the math as long as your able to use it to achieve the results you need.   

I will add this info you have enlightened me on in my journal.  I do think some members get the two confused.  I've seen nunmbers that were on par with mine and ones that seemed to low to make since.

Caps:. Rh of the room does play a role.  My house gets really dry in the winter.  I have to run a whole house humidifier, and one in my closet that I keep my tubs in, in order to have a true no maintenance tubs.  Other wise I have to mist more then I prefer too. 



With spawn jars and bags, Rh shouldn't effect it.  As far as I know, Bag filters and sfd don't allow moisture to escape.  I think the top exposed grains moisture evaporates, but is still in the jar/bag.  I find a slight increase in moisture content helps. Weather it's a bump in LI or prep.

Jhova has a point with colonization speed. It don't matter if colonization is quick enough.  Doesn't have time to dry out.

I tried a unmodded tubs, and I put a lot of mp tape over the holes to no avail.  And you can't really tighten up shoeboxes.  Once I took care of the Rh, my tubs glistened.  Now this is only a winter time issues for me.  In summer I actually run a dehumidifier in my basement and my main floor and my tubs glistened with no misting.  I also run 5qts water to my cvg ( 1 brick, 2qts verm, handful gypsum)
