Curious about Myco Bags, anyone?
    #557218 - 02/20/02 09:43 AM (16 years, 6 days ago)

I thought I'd share my experience, so far.  Not only have I never grown shrooms before, I've never tried them either.  I don't trust picking them, and I don't really trust dealers (not that I could find one for shrooms anyway).  So, when I saw the Myco Bags I got happy.

We got them on the 19th of Jan. I think, and innoculated that day.  It was easy, just sterilized a spot on the bag, inserted the spores, and taped them up.  We harvested Bag #1 this weekend, 30 g. wet.  It's already got new pins again.  The second bag we harvested last night, 100 g.!!!  They are beautiful, too.  Very nice looking shrooms.  Bag #3 has some good growth and I think will be ready to harvest this weekend, and bag #4 is very slow, just a few pins so far.

All in all, a very successful experiment!  The only thing I don't like about the bags is how difficult it is to harvest.  The bags are narrow and you have to reach down in them, and picking the shrooms without breaking them is a little difficult.  Don't know how that could be resolved, though.  This was our very first time growing shrooms and it looks like all 4 bags are going to be a success, and it was a breeze.

Hubby and I are going to build a terrarium now.  This is just too much fun.

Good to hear Angelina. The hardest part for a newbie like you guys and me when it comes to bags is the time. It takes the patience of Jobe dont it? Thats probably the number one lesson i ve learned about shrooms the past 6 or 7 weeks is it takes patience. It's hard for me to keep my hands off and not check the bags 5 or 6 times a day. LOL... Congrats on your success.

Congrats on the success. Now that you have succesfully cultivated mushrooms you could get more of those bags and instead of fruiting them from the bag you could case them. Or you could try and start from scratch now that you have mushies to print from. Again congratulations on the crop.

Speaking of casing a myco-bag. This is an experiment with the bag top cut off and casing put on top. This is a species not known for its abundant fruits.

Ummm......... not really. Unless you want to break them out of the bags and try casing them you will just have to wait and see what happens. I imagine the bags are just delayed and will fruit again eventually. A sporeless strain might be a good one for the bag method. Then you wouldn't haven't to watch them so close near the end of the growing cycle.

Most of the mushrooms are produced in the first two flushes and the small amount you get after that is just gravy. So if you got your two flushes and its close to 1/2 ounce dry, thats about all you can expect. Maybe you just got real heavy early flushes and the substrate is exhausted.
