Time to sow Poppy?

I'm having a hard time finding the same poppy grow teks I had seen before and had a pretty simple question.

I had gotten some poppy seeds in late spring and my reading led me to believe it was to late in the year to sow. If I remember right fall is the ideal time to sow and it'll get established and ready for the spring.

Is this correct? Still too early yet? Am I way off and waiting until after the last frost better?

Where do you live?
Im in Zone 8 and I sowed mine almost a month ago.

You should sow now. You may have to protect them from the first couple of frosts depending on how soon that is for you and how established your plants are.

8-9 depending on the map.

Guess I'll sow some and see. I could try to keep some indoors till spring and plant more after last frost.

We just got out of the rainy season and the temps are just starting to dip now. Kinda sudden.

Same here. They can take low temps while seedlings, just not a freeze.
Get some frost cloth to throw over them when it does freeze and they'll be fine

No problem. Once theyre well established you shouldnt have to protect them at all in zones 8-9

I'm in zone 7 and I sow around thanks giving. It's far too hot for them to germinate until it starts hitting 59f at night. And once they become slightly larger than just seedlings they need no protection I've had some buried under snow and I think most if not all survived. The only thing that stinks is by May they are dead where I live.

Cool. The last couple nights it has been getting that cold. idk maybe a freak thing.

I made a few little indoor starters. In the next few days I'll take a walk and spread some outside, do it again in like a month when it's a bit colder.

I did last year and had a pretty descent poppy patch for maybe one hour of labor rototilling down only 4" and tossing out seeds.

This year I rototilled down about 1.5ft and mixed in leafs/cut grass compost. I think between the deeper till, nutrients, and over wintering I'll have some beasts.

I try to sow when just rain will get them from seedling to established since I grow them out of town I only see them on average 1x week but certain weeks of the month I'm out there everyday working.

So is this a gorilla grow? Do you not have space to grow them in your yard or are you apprehensive since they are technically illegal to grow but often over looked. I know someone was arrested in my state because when police showed up to his residence on an unrelated call he answered the door by asking "you guys are here for the opium aren't you" I know many people think that if you don't lance the pods you can't get into trouble. But that's not true.

Not a gorilla grow. I have some property out in the country that I'm working on to build a house pretty soon. All of them are grown out in the open. I'm not really worried about getting in trouble for them. I sow a lot of different flower species including multiple poppy species/varity. I feel that it's probably better to have a lot going on vs a mono crop of poppy. I rototill large patches, sow seeds, and watch the pollinators do their thing some spring. I don't endulge in the pods so I'm not really aiming to grow as many as possible.

Whoa I thought the flowers were legal as long as you don't harvest them. Glad you said something. I'll have to plan accordingly and plant them under some cover I guess. Too much air traffic for open field

Lot of it has to do with your intentions, what you look like, whether you are planting different flowers, growing poppies is manufacturing sch 2. Poppy pods and straw are specifically listed.  The thing is they aren't going to arrest some sixty year old lady that is a member of the local gardening club. They would be much more likely to arrest someone who looks like they do drugs, has tattoos, throws wild parties that the police have to break up, someone who grows only poppies and grows them as a crop like in rows. And I will tell you this if you slice the pods the scars that are left on the pods are highly visable. Like from 30-40 feet away. It leaves these black lines in the pods that anyone with half a brain would know why they had those marks. So be careful and more than likely everything will be fine.

I got a couple plants here and there, but I totally fit a stereotype. I thought I could spread them in the open as decoration and for seeds, and hide small patches for harvest. Nothing like a crazy large crop, but I guess I'll keep it all out of the open.

Grow other types of flowers, don't Lance them, and play dumb. This spring when I cut the pods off I pulled up the plants and put them in my compost pile. They quickly decayed into organic matter.

I scattered seeds out over areas that I did not till or do anything to. Poppies grew, they were tiny, stunted, and produced small pods. Incredibly easy plant to grow. If you provide loose amended soil that's weed free you'll have a bountiful harvest.

I put a little mulch around them to keep weeds down and retain some moisture if there's a dry spell. Other than that..nada
