So it's best to plant when there is still snow?

I've heard that fall can be good, or that early spring can be good.

I dumped about a pound of seeds out on the snow in a nice south facing mountain meadow a few days ago.  The snow is still anywhere from 2 to 5 feet deep, but we were supposed to get more, so I figured I'd let the seeds get buried.  This way, as the snow melts, the seeds should sprout at the earliest possible time.  They're spice rack seeds and I found them on sale at the grocery store for 99 cents for 127 grams.  I bought out all they had, about twenty bottles.  If even one out of a hundred germinate and grow, the mountain should be very colorful.

throw them on the snow!
i went out sowing seeds around the local area like that a couple of weeks ago.
easy pickings for birds though, so try to cover them a bit...

you can sow poppy seeds at any time from late autumn, through winter, into spring.
they'll germinate when the conditions are right :super:

i gotcha. thats a good idea. i cant believe I diddnt think of that. they just go dormant until its time and then boom poppies. they weather is fucked up in NY when it warms up it will be warm one day and freezing the next. do you think will they come out of dormancy, germinate and then die or do you think enough will survive. And what if we dont have pounds of seeds at our disposal? i guess its pretty cheap but i dont even think ive seen them at the groecery store plus it would probably look shady for a 20 year old to buy pounds of poppy seeds in person.

one warm day wont be enough to raise the soil temperature to the level where it will trigger germination.
its going to take a few days/weeks of consecutive "spring" weather to get them to pop.

poppy seedlings and small plantlets are pretty hardy anyway.

SB,

Poppies don't transplant well, only start in ground.

Degradable peat planters or pellets worked just fine for me and I'm in the same area as him.
