Worlds Smallest Flowering Poppy Contest.
#10162097 - 04/14/09 01:51 AM (14 years, 11 months ago) |

last year i saw a hell of alot of tiny papaver somniferum plants/flowers. so lets see what we can all come up with this year...
we need a picture from the side showing how tall and a picture from above showing the fully opened flower diameter, and include a ruler for scale please.
whoever can grow the smallest wins nothing.

I don't own a ruler so take it for my word, it's smaller than my pinky nail though, so you can estimate whatever you choose.

I thought this was worlds smallest flowering peyote contest
I am disappointed
But try the mccormick, etc store brand poppy seeds.
They apparently use tiny cultivars so child laborers in asia have an easier time picking them
Fun fact, huh?

i think ill get on this lil contest for the hell of itQuote:
ethnoguy said: What do we win? No opium? lol
EG
i think the pods are active man
that grow in 07 i threw a palm full of seeds into a planterbox to check germination rate of recently bought bag of bulk persian whites. the germination rate was great high 90's if not 100, like i said it was the middle of summer in washington and the day lengths triggered flowering right off the bat. how ever i did notice they instantly started flowering after i gave them a veg fertilizer......weird shit
anyway they grew about 1 1/2- 2 in high and had the cutest lil flowers haha, pods matured to about the size of BB's. so i had this whole planter of mature micro poppys. i harvested{lol} the pods and had a small handful, i ate a few and they tasted distinctly like op......gross. i kept them all mostly for show when friends came over but some point last year i got the bright idea to smoke them. it was needless to say horrible to smoke powdered pods. I'm a Farly seasoned opiate user and can say it yealded small but noticeable effects. i actually felt like i was doing something dangerous, i had this idea in my head that maybe the underdeveloped poppys produced unsafe levels of other alkoloids. there were effects even if it was just lack of oxygen from smoking horrid plant fiber
on another note the lager pods{still no more than a BB} actually had a few what looked like developed seeds. these seeds however were discovered after i started smoking them lol maybe i could try this again to get seeds and breed a "banzai poppy" also, however useless it seems id like to gather a bunch of em and try to get an estimate of alkaloid %

lol ok, well it's not flowering yet but i bet that you have them on a 24hr light cycle
so when it does flower, don't forget a ruler in the pics, we need a side shot showing height and a plan view showing the diameter of the flower.
i might come up with a prize for this if we get enough people participating

I just got a good idea. Someone should put one in an atmosphere that has really low O2 and CO2, like mix in alot of N2 or He.

Oh ho ho. I'm still winning the slow-grow race. Here's an update of my mini poppy
The two post-looking things are mechanical pencil lead if that gives some size perspective

I should try my hand at this (and at growing normal poppies), it looks fun

It's the next best thing to gigantic pods. If you can't grow a poppy that will yield any amount of opium that matters, might as well grow a poppy with the smallest flower and pod you can. Why? Because they're cute.
It allows tiny, useless poppies to have pride in themselves too.
