Poppy Questions? quick khat q?

Hey guys iam gonna give poppies a shot this year and i have a few questions for ya! I was gonna plant some outside in early spring and do some seedling in my window seal along with a 26 watt CFl 6500k.

Ok so the ones going out in early spring i plan on sowing them in the flower bed along the east side of my house. Would this even work there? Do they need full sun? Also any tips on how to sow poppy seeds? Like how many seeds per hole and how far away from eac other all that good stuff.

Now my garden is over our septic fingers and we had new ones put in last fall. So we still need to put more dirt and top soil down. I would just plant here and do no seedlings inside b/c this spot gets full sun but more dirt has to be put down. So once the dirt gets down i plan on just planting the seedlings in those peat pots in the garden with full sun. Now i live in the midwest so by what date should i have my seeds planted?

ps: Could you grow khat in the midwest say if you grew it in a big pot and brought it inside during winter?

i just threw mine seeds in a patch of dirt and mixed it around. planted in january and they tiny now. you should check out the poppy growers thread in the subforum. :goodluck:

Don't bother trying to grow them indoors, you will be disappointed.:yesnod:


You want to plant them somewhere where they get at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day for a decent crop. To sow the seeds just sow on the surface, they need light to germinate. Don't worry about spacing as this can be sorted out later. Keep them moist until they germinate.


Once they get established you then want to start thinning out the crop to give the plants room to grow larger. Aim to give the plants about 6-12 inches space from the next one, this will let them get big, if you don't thin them each plant will compete with each other and your yield will be dramatically decreased.
